If You Wanted To Revamp A Retro Classic...

    ...Which would it be!?
Being an 'extremely minor' games creator (As in I generally using dismal programs to make even more dismal games) I have a tendancy to 'Revamp' classics as opposed to creating my own original products... The current theme being breakout (Which I have had quite a lot of good reports on, and is going VERY well and looking quite nice).

But if you were given the power to revamp or recreated a retro classic or an old game, what would it be!?

3d Commander Keen would be cool. Little Big Adventure 1 with all the 21st centuary graphical mod cons.

Gods by the Bitmap Brothers. Not the greatest 2d platformer ever, but one of the most beautiful.

God's... 'Into the Wonderful' was the music track for that wasn't it!?
I'm mistaking Gods for some other Amiga strategy game I think...
There's miles worth of Amiga games I'd love to revamp, but I'd require a couple of animators or graphic creators for it seeing as my skills are basically limited to backgrounds and such...

A 3D version of Turrican would be the best thing ever.

It has to be Ikari Warriors for me, or Kabal(maybe spelt Cabal?).

pn03 is a 3d version of either of those games, and yes its Cabal

Mine Sweeper 3d. With mines in a 3d plane, would add that extra level of difficulty.

Or a 3d Dizzy adventure. God I loved those dizzy games. At least the adventure ones. The arcade ones were alright but dizzy down the rapids sucked.

if i was to revamp any game it would either be altered beast, bonanza bros or bionic commando a classic this would tear metal gear to shreds.

Don't trust them anymore, they may gay-it-all-up like Monkey Island 4 [I would have said monkey island, except 4 was such a disaster, I would rather forget ... only played demo, nearly made me cry though]

Saw Pics, and although still does look as mentally Disturbing as ever :)

it would have to be Elite, which I know (Elite4) is in the pipeline, but I could learn to program and write the game myself quicker than they have been, it's been 'coming soon' for about 5 years now, and I'm gettign mightly p1ssed off that they haven't got at least some decent screenshots to wet our appetites with, and afaik David Braben has gone walkabout and it doesn't look like he'll be coming back.

I know Frontier and First Encounters were not anywhere near as good as they should have been, but by now they should really have come up with something more than the bugger all they have given us fans.

oh well, maybe next year.

At risk of possibly going off-topic [apologies if am ...]
Hmm, i dunno - Max doesn't seem as insane as he used to be heh, and not all too sure about voices - I think best revamp done to date was Monkey Island 3, all the voices were perfect, from Guybrush having the most gay voice possible for a pirate [except for the gay pirates during sea battles], murray the demonic skull [favorite character ever in any game], to Elaine ... everything about game perfect I thought ... shame couldn't have another...

Unirally....i have no snes anymore and i miss this most of all

I dont know if Duke nukem is retro...i'll still wait for 3d realms

spy versus spy for the crazy c64 2 player mode...nuff said...

a proper kirby platformer....i was addicted

In my opinion the new lord of the rings games are as close to golden axe as u can get. both are insanely playable and pretty much the same.

Frontier in full HW accelerated OpenGl 1.4 graphics, HW 3D sound, and no bugs.
    Possibly MMORPG.

I'd pay per month to play it.

    spy versus spy

    Now THAT would be fun...
I had all of the Spy V Spy games, but the original & second were the best - The third getting a bit too annoying...

    Turrican 3D sounds damn interesting...
They've already stretched Sonic The Hedghog around, so why not stretch 'Zool' - I think it'd be capable of a decent platform game...

Kirby's Adventures on the NES - Despite the overwhelming pink'ness, it was hellishly addictive... I tried creating a new platformer involving the 'ingestion' of enemies but that flopped.

There has to be more classics...

Maybe a new Sam&Max or Day Of The Tenticle?

AFAIK, the people who worked on Turrican are making a game for the cube called Thornado, supposedly a sequel in every sense but the name.

Whoever it was who said an update of dizzy..if i remember rightly, i saw a full 3d screenshot of a new dizzy game in the back of last months GamesTM :D

If i had to have a game remade..i know its not quite retro..but FFVII..full next gen graphics..orchestrated music....what i wouldnt give..
As far as retro games go....i think The Last ninja series is long overdue for a remake..best. games. ever!

Someone sent me a link for a porno version of breakout. It really injects some new life into it :D

I wish Konami would make Axelay 2 like they promised when you finished it twice on hard mode.

Turrican was a bit overrated imo. I loved turrican 1 + 2 on the C64 but it was nothing compared to the Contra games and Metroid 2. The Super Turrican games didn't play like turrican but were better for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Don't say I'm the only one who thought of Metroid Prime as a kind of Turrican 3D? Morph ball, bombs, huge bosses.....

I'd love to see updates of some of Thalamus' games on the C64::

    Creatures 1 and 2 (Torture in 3D!)
Delta and Armalyte (Two of the best shooters ever)
    Hunters Moon (Puzzley type shooter)
Mayhem in Monsterland (Imagine this in 3D?)
    Hawkeye (Fast platformer)
Citadel (Claustrophobic shooter with great gameplay mechanics)

Outside of Thalamus, how about some of Andrew Braybrooks games?

Paradroid (Imagine the mechanics of paradroid in an environment like System Shock?)
Plus Gribbleys Day Out, Morpheus, Uridium.....

    Others?

How about Sacred Armour of Antiriad? Cauldron? Dizzy 3D?

I could type all night :)

    - Dave.

AFAIK = 'As Far As I Know'
and will you be making breakout available?
    its a great game!
Most definately - And if I wanted to be cheeky, I could even sell it.

I posted about it here before (amp might remember it seeing as I asked for his review) and that was a long time ago (Or should I say, an ANCIENT version of it ago).

My latest breakout project allows you to configure the game (Bat & Ball) to suit you're needs. Basically you are given a certain amount of stat points to dedicate to the speed of the bat, the power of the ball (Yes, specific objects take more damage), which special attacks you want the ball to have when fully charged (Massive explosions, flamethrowers, rocket dispensers, multi-ball attacks) and special bat abilities such as aim aid, sticky bat, homing ball aid, increased acceleration / deceleration and much more... If you could imagine a Breakout RPG then this is the one... I'll post a demo as soon as possible in it's own thread. It's been renamed from MehPong-'Tour Of The Elements' to 'V-Battle - WaterWorks' and you basically have to reach specific objectives before the water level (which determines how 'high up' your bat is, and the point with which the ball can be lost), reaches too high.

Back on topic, Spy Vs Spy would most definately be a great one.
I've never played the latest Metroid Game, yet now that it has been mentioned, it really does have many of Turrican's traits. Loved the original NES Metroid.

I'm not sure if games like DUNE or Defender Of The Crown would make good revamps seeing as there are so many similar games out there of that genre, but I'm a very big fan of strategy games.
Loved Jet Set Willy - One addictive yet seemingly impossible game.
We need more games like that - They'd last you forever!

Defender of the Crown has already been remade and is now available on the cheap for the Xbox and PS2. Called Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown, it's very true to the original which depending on your point of view is either a good or bad thing. Personally I love it, the narative is different, but the core gameplay remains intact - it's split up into subgames of jousting, ambushing, sword-fighting and held together by a Risk-type strategy system. Highly recommended for fans of the original, but everyone else should probably beware as they may find it outdated.

I remember playing it a couple of times on the Amiga and (more specifically) remember being jousted back to the nine-hell's and back, constantly, to the point where I got sick of it and melted the game.

What about ancient games like Space Invaders or Pong...
They've already decided to take a new approach on 'on-line' gaming with revamps of Tetris and 3D Pong and the likes... What would be you're ideal 'ancient' game revamp!

Heh... perfect oldie to give the full 3d revamp: Marble Madness :p

I've gotta go with Tellox, Haunting was one of the most interesting and fun games to ever have hit the megadrive. Would love to see it make a return to our consoles.

And Sega cancelled a Gamecube outing of Nights!!! I urge you all to harrass the daughters of whatever people are responsible for such a decision until they finally repent and GIVE US A NEW NIGHTS GAME!

    Syndicate

That games was so ahead of its time!

And please, dont mention the abysmal Syndicate Wars!

    Syndicate

    Could I agree anymore?
    No...

Ken, I condemn you for bringing back ancient memories involving playing your Amiga and demanding that all agents carry four shotguns each, with the odd one having a flamethrower or maybe a Gauss rifle...

Syndicate Wars was a little... Un-Satisfying, but it wasn't terribly bad - Just a little rushed... I can't honestly see too many ways with which they could revamp the old version.

superb game, worth buying a gamecube for imho.
much like mario 64, there are moments when you just sit back and think "blimey, this is metroid in 3D!"

what happened to that new version of speedball?
the bitmap brothers seem to be accumulating funds by doing pc conversions of console games atm...

So I assume that means it isn't avaliable for the PC then?
I need to get my grubby mitts on some new games to keep me sane when my constructive mind goes docile...

Wonderboy, that fat headed, hammer throwing, snail hating bastard in nappy's...
I could see him getting his own game :)

    yep, gamecube exclusive.
although at heart its an fps, it just wouldn't work with a keyboard and mouse (man, i never thought i'd say that!)
it was built from the ground up with the gamecube controller in mind.

oh yeah, you should be able to pick up a gc, metroid prime (players choice version) and a memory card for under €160.
you'll prolly get the zelda bonus disc as well if you buy a vanilla cube package:mad:
