According to the log your modem is dialing 1893150150 ! Is this number specific to your area because I was under the impression that all Eircom Internet customers used the number 1892150150

AAAHHHH Gotcha !!! I guess you learn something new everyday eh ??

Have you tried to connect to the normal dialup at 1892150150 ? Maybe try it to confirm your init/modem/phone line are OK ! You may need to create a new "dial-up" connection but it will help narrow down the problem n'est pas ?

I am having the exact same problem on Eircomnet Anytime, dialling through Mullingar. It seems noticably worse in the past week or so, and was terrible in early Dec.

It is intermittent and when not present I have excellent connection speeds.

My connection hangs completly, cannot display the page message etc and when I try to disconnect it takes ages, sometimes I have to even reboot. Other times you just get cut off and have to dial again.

Im using Norton Internet Security 2004 and I thought mayby the firewall settings were causing this.

In the Internet Connection Status pop up window, under activity I can get anything from 4 or 5 up to 70 or 80 errors logged!!

Thought it was just me, have spent the last two hours on Annoyances.org trying to find a solution but now I'm thinkin it must be down to Eircom having read your post Al..........

It might be Eircom, on the other hand it might be that your TCP/IP settings have gone rogue.

The other thing that sometimes annoys dialup connections is not having exact DNS numbers - the normal eircom.net DNS numbers are

    159.134.237.6
    159.134.248.17

but maybe they're not right for eircom anytime - anyone know?

Does anyone deal regularly with dialup tech support - can you post a step-by-step on how to reinstall TCP/IP, choosing the right options - I can never remember which to choose, and when I was on dialup used to just fudge it and get it right.

they are the right numbers for the TCP/IP for Anytime, off eircoms website, but they do not give you the advanced settings anywhere, no doubt to get you to ring the high toll service number, and they sent me a nice automated email earlier to say they dont deal with tech issues by email, advising me.................yes : to ring 1590 or whatever the hell it is

I know its not the solution your looking for, but upgrading to Isdn would solve the problem. I used to sometimes get a lot of redialling when I was on 56k, but never had the problem with Isdn, and the connection never died either

Eircomic, have you tried setting up a dialler for a different free service - IOL, Orange, Eircom.net, whatever - and seeing if you get the same problem?

If it happens that you *do* get the same problem with other services, then:

Have you tried the same settings on a different computer?

Have you tried going into (I assume you're on a PC?) Start/Settings/Networking and killing off your current dialler and making a new one, putting in all the settings fresh?

Have you tried deleting your current TCP/IP settings and setting up TCP/IP newly? (Can't remember how to do this on a PC, but it solved my problems many's the time.)

Have you tried replacing the phone line running between your computer and the phone socket?

Have you tried opening up your computer (switch it off and unplug everything from the back first), banging your hands off a metal radiator to get rid of any static electricity, then unscrewing and resetting and re-screwing-in the modem card?

I feel for you with this annoying problem. In my experience, it's probably that your dialler or TCP/IP settings have become corrupted, and replacing them will help.

Second on the list would be the actual phone line - either the one between computer and wall, or the line into your home.

I visited friends-of-friends on a mountain in Leitrim last year, bringing my PowerBook (Mac laptop) with me. They said they were having exactly the problems you have now; I deleted and replaced their dialler in Network Settings, deleted and replaced their TCP/IP settings, using their Windows disk to install a new one, and with help on the phone from Indigo.

Still no luck; I plugged in my PowerBook, using its own length of phone line, which I'd brought with me, and still had only intermittent and slow connection. It was obviously the phone line from the road below up to the house - though Eircom and told them that this phone line was fine. But then, Eircom (at that time anyway; don't know about now) said that the company only guaranteed talk-quality phone lines, not data-quality, on a home phone.

If you can afford it, and if you're somewhere that there's a service, get a wireless broadband connection. You don't have to pay for internet phone calls, it's always on; and you don't get this kind of nonsense going on. And it's whoossh fast.

It may be a call routing issue as well. From the log

Eircom lost that call it seems ! If you line is ex directory you must release caller ID so put 142 in front of 1893150150 you should not have to pay for those calls.

The next one is VERY ODD

Very odd that last lot. This is consistent with the modem receiving a +++ command but otherwise hard to explain by any way other than showing you. RTM and see if the +++ listen can be disabled.

Oh, another thing suddenly occurred to me. In the unlikely event that it's not a TCP/IP problem, go into Start/Settings/Control Panel and open up the Modem control panel, see what's shown there; also look in My Computer and see what modems are listed under Device Manager.

(Microsoft keep shifting around how to get to Device Manager; in older Windows versions you right-click on My Computer and go to Properties and it's one of the tabs there; if it's not there on your system, ask here.)

If the modem is shown with a yellow ! mark, or if more than one modem is shown, delete it or them.

The reason I suggest this is yet another experience with mountainy friends - these ones in the Wicklow Hills. They were having the same kind of experiences as you, eircomic, except that they actually couldn't dial in at all most of the time.

When I and their 12-year-old son looked into the settings, it turned out that their attempts to reinstall the modem had installed it and other modems over and over again. We nuked *all* of the modems listed and restarted, set up the modem in Hardware Setup or whatver it's called, and bzoomp, they had perfect access.

Another horrible possibility is what happened to my next-door neighbours, who bought a cheap computer; no modem would work with it - I even tried an old ISA modem - and they just had to give back the computer to the person they'd bought it from and buy another. But it probably won't come to that. (Before doing that, bring another computer in and see if that works on your phone line.)

This may or may not help.... I was onto Eircom Tech Support this morning (talking very fast on the 1550 no!!!!!!!) and they gave me this modem string to add:

    +MS=V34

It seems to have fixed the problem I had.

My connection speed in the display has reduced to a constant 33.6kbps(from average 46.5) but the actual speed does not seem to have altered.

Anyone know what this command means?

    Might help you Al...................??

Thats the speed throttling command for a Conexant chipset modem, he could have a Lucent type instead which would have a different command to do the same thing , the s108 register comes to mind, dunno why.
