Very roughly it takes as much energy to get to the Moon as to Mars. This is because you can use aero-braking and parachutes on Mars but to get to the lunar surface plan on dedicating half your mass to fuel or they'll be naming a new crater after you.

In terms of delta vee, the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos are closer than the Moon, Mars and most Near Earth Asteroids. Their low density suggest they may be volatile rich. If so, their volatiles could be exported to the Earth Moon L1 point and other locations in near Earth space.

If anybody wants a watch a really good sci-fi movie that genuinely depricts what landing on another world would be like first explorers, watch Europa Report.

It definitely removes the whole 100% positive Carl Sagan starry eyed approach (though I love him) and replaces it with the unsettling but still wonderous view of the universe

They also do real science and act like the world class professionals they portray, basically they're competent

at the worst of times
