I remember when i started using this word about 5 years ago, it applied to most walks of life, most college go-er's, and the general population of musical artists, so then why, 5 years on, do people continue to be pretentious?

edited due to seriouly bad grammer, i ean really bad.!
    im not weird.

The word is over-used. People like to label things they don't understand as being pretentious because then, they don't have to make an effort to understand them. That said, there are pretentious people out there but I think it's better to give solid reasons why you think they're pretentios rather than simply labeling them as such.

i have my reasons, i am extremely open minded, i try different things etc..... i tend to call someone pretentious because somthing sombody believes they deserve merit over someone else just becasue they say or do somthing. but it is over used, infact i've toned down. but still it is an excellent word.

I reckon a lot of it is to do with loadsamoney - not needing to depend on others so no need to perform all the social nicities - or maybe you're just paranoid or maybe they don't think you are PLU.

    The government most probably simu,

and its human nature i suppose we all like to (at some point or another) think that were bigger and better than the common herd. its not a bad quaility i suppose i mean you could be worse things than pretentious, but i agree with Capt'n Midnight too his reasons seem pretty sound.

Speaking of "pretentious" did anyone see the arts show on Channel 4 last night. I couldn't stop laughing for ages, and when I did, I really couldn't believe that there were such idiots in the world who thought so much of themselves.

Basil: Mother Johnson. Mother Johnson. Come out, come out, wherever you are. (a very nice and very elderly lady appears at the door) How do you do, are you enjoying yourself?...

Are you saying that Basil Fawlty coined the "Pretentious, ... moi?" phrase?

Result from the canoe.ca quiz. All I can say is that these things clearly aren't scientific.
You are pretentious. Although you wouldn't feel entirely comfortable sipping cognac and discussing Fellini with Frasier and Niles Crane, you think of yourself as somebody who enjoys the finer things in life. You get a great deal of pleasure out of fine dining and beautiful clothes, but you can't hide the fact that you're as interested in the label on the outside of the wine you're drinking as you are in the actual taste.

Everything you do—and everybody that you choose to hang out with—has been carefully selected in order to cultivate a certain image. You see yourself as a person of "taste" and you take great care to ensure that your friends see you the same way.

Although you secretly detest most of the cultural events that your friends convince you to go to—your favorite part of a night at the opera is when the curtains come together and everybody applauds—you are too vain to admit that you'd much rather spend your time sitting at home watching "Survivor."

Sadly, your pretension prevents you from sharing things like your love of Diet Coke and Ally McBeal with your friends, so you end up doing the things you most enjoy by yourself. Tell your friends that you've cancelled the chalet in the Laurentians, and ask them if they'd like to join you on your road trip to Saskatoon.

    On a not unrelated matter:
I tihnk it was Immanuel kant that said "Shurup yows!"
I read somewhere that Immanuel Kant but Genghis Khan

Doubt it. It's told by the hairy guy to Sybill as the punchline of a joke. If Cleese or Connie Booth had written it they might have made a bigger deal of it so it's probably a bit older than that.

I don't get this thread, you're all stupid.

The quiz isn't great. It presumes, for example, that if you prefer opera to pop music etc that you're pretentious. Personally, I would listen to opera more than pop because I enjoy it more and I don't care what people think of that.

It doesn't manage to divide those who do things for their own enjoyment from those who do the same things because they want to appear sophisticated. The latter are the pretentious ones.

    Yeah, I know - it's only a quiz.

Rubbish. Fingerless gloves are useful - they keep your hands warm but you still get full use of your fingertips (handy at ATMs, fro getting money from wallet etc). The whole point is that pretention is largely relative - you wore the gloves because you wanted to, presumably not to show off. If your friend thought you were being pretentious, he was wrong.

I don't think wearing any type of clothes makes you pretentious.. Usually pretention invoolves pretending you are more intelligent or know more about something than you actually do! USUALLY!

The Mars Volta are soooooo Pretentious anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭KlodaX

    Malcolm in the middle

You enjoy the finer things in life, but this does not mean you're pretentious. Because you're able to balance your appreciation of fine food, art and literature with your preference for pop music and pop tarts, you're just as likely to meet a friend for coffee and discuss the latest episode of "Malcolm in the Middle" as you are to spend a night at the ballet.

Although you take pride in your appearance, your balanced approach to life allows you to enjoy the company of those who don't. By emphasizing substance over what appears on the surface, you've been able to surround yourself with a diverse group of friends.

You see yourself as somebody who knows exactly what you like and you avoid trends. Carefully weighing your "yin" against your "yang," you take great pains to balance all aspects of your life. The only thing you insist on is that others share your open-minded attitudes.

    I concur :D

.. wait hang on.. .does this make me an average person? ... Don't they know WHO I am???? :p
