I've been thinking about this idea for a while and it only makes sense, although I doubt the taxi unions would like the idea.

Why aren't all taxi's the same colour?
Green or something, they can keep all everything else the same but would be a bloody good idea for them to be the same colour.

Hay it works in New York and plenty of other countries so why not here?

There was talk about this before, I definitely heard this in the last 3 years, since deregulation. But I think the expense of it was what turned then off the idea!!!
It is a good idea, but like most good ideas in this country...they are never implemented!!!!!

Because knowing the government, they would set up a cartel or monopoly of what kind of coloured car can be used and make a nice kickback from taxi drivers being forced to buy them.

Whats wrong with just looking for a taxi sign?

Well all the taxi's in ireland have a sign on top of them.... so it seems like a un-neccesary expense.

Lots of hackney cabs don't have signs. Only way to recognise them is by the ariel usually.

Hackney's dont need them because your not supposed to flag them down in the street, and if you do, they arent supposed to stop. ;)

hackneys have the little yellow plates as well

it would be a better idea if they made taxi signs on the roofs of cars more visible at night half of the time the lights in taxis signs arent even working

Yea it's against the law for hackneys to stop on the street.... and sit on a taxi rank.

True expense does come into it, but surely they can start this year buying all the same colour cars in a couple of years everything would be sorted
    :D

Agreed on the taxi color. Also they should make taxi's use the same type of car. I've been to spain....well the canaries and they all drive White Mercedes.

It would be a bonanzaa for mercedes dealers in ireland but look at it this way. If the taxi union got all its members together and they started to order cars in bulk they could make a hughe saving on the actual colst of tyhe vehicle. So every year they could order say 75 merc's at the same time and it would benfit both the public and the taxi drivers.

Taxi drivers get the cars at a cheaper rate.

Public get nicer cars to sit in as taxi drivers would be encouraged to upgrade their cars more regularly.

Anpther suggestion for taxi drivers would be to STFU while driving me around. I just want a lift, not for you to talk to me....i'll pay extra for that if indeed i want it. I don't ask the bus driver to chat with me all day do i? Feck off!

Not anymore. They can stop if they're flagged, but they can't sit at the rank.

at night half of the time the lights in taxis signs arent even working

Well errr when the lights off it means they aint looking for a fare or already have one ;)

What's the point? The bloody signs are big enough. And forcing them to by the same make of car is ridiculous. They don't even do that in New York. All taxi cars have to pass a taxi suitability test anyway, that includes such idiotic things having to have a full spare wheel instead of a space saver in the boot...

i'd just settle for the bloody cabs with the yellow light on stopping when you flag them, whats the deal with that, anyone try flagging a car on the quays on a saturday night they never stop even with the light on.

I agree with Dataisgood, if the stupid cnuts would switch the sign on when empty and off when engaged it would make it a lot less frustrating. Or if they have a lot more to concentrate on that I'm not aware of then link the roof sign to the meter so when it's charging a fare the sign is off.

As regards them all buying the same car from now on and within a few years all taxis being the same. HA! I have been in some right pieces of crap over the years, including my next door neighbour's 12 year old cab (proper plate) which he admits only got through the NCT because he knew who to drop the backhander to.

isnt their a taxi company (city cabs think) that have all their cars painted yellow, and they are the same make, something like a ford fiesta....

as for taxi lights, the drivers never use the damn things, I almost always flag taxis that have their lights off, or else you see a full taxi with the light on... they just couldnt be bothered half the time...

sure but i'm thinking about the empty cabs with the lights on that still don't stop, i thought they perhaps they felt a duty to return to the rank or something

perhaps, my uncle is a taxi driver and he says he prefers picking up people off the streets rather than ranks because when your driving up to someone in the middle of the path you can make a good judgement on how likely they are to be trouble/dangerously drunk, but at a rank its luck of the draw... i doubt it makes much of a difference money-wise where you go

This is actually one of my pet peeves. It drives me nuts when Taxi drivers don't knock off the light on the roof if they already have a fare. In my more inebriated states I've often wished for retribution in the form of a brick through the back window...

It just comes down to the same thing as most of the rest of this countries problems: the loss of common decency and manners combined with disgusting laziness.

I think the problem they have is when they are off duty (as in sign removed from roof), all the neighbours / in-laws / whatever will know they are a taxi driver.

One of the joys working in a petrol station, I know about 6 taxi drivers who will collect me straight away. And if not too busy will give me a free fare.

Why don't you report him, Milltown? Are you happy to sit back and let a dangerous car drive round our streets? It should be easy enough to trace whoever approved the NCT and get them both into a nice steaming pile of trouble.
