The very last page of the Intoxicating Liqour Act (cant be arsed spelling it right) permits a place to refuse someone over 18 as long as the sign is prominentley displayed on the exterior. Now think about it, how many places have you been refused from where this is not evident?

They can refuse you if you don't meet their dress code, if you look dodgy, or if you're pissed as a skunk. At the end of the day clubs/pubs have their own door codes which there's no law against, unless they're sexist/racist/homophobic.

Pubs are public houses and have to admit everyone* over their age limit who isn't drunk. Clubs are private and have no such obligation.

    * They may still deny you admission, but need to afterwards provide you with a reason in writing, if you so request. A good example of this would be known trouble makers, etc.
