Does anyone have any info on getting to Uluru (Ayers rock), should I fly to alice springs and take a tour, or should I fly to Ayers rock resort (how do I get to Uluru from ayers rock airport)??

I can't drive BTW so that limits my options.

Also can a trip be done in a day or should I stay for longer. I will be travelling from sydney..

    thanks

depends how much time you have. Ayers rock resort is nothing special - just an overpriced hotel beside the rock. You can do a day tour from Alice but, in the summer, you need to get up very early to get there (2 hours drive?) before the rock gets too hot to climb.

If you don't mind roughing it a bit, and can spare a few days, I would do a camping/drive trip which brings you to Kings Canyon (spectacular) and the Olgas (nice enough) and camps in the outback. These vary from 2 days up to the one I did which spent 10 days driving from Adelaide to Alice seeing loads of stuff in the outback.

There's nothing worth seeing in Alice itself - most of the people are living on welfare and/or alcoholics - but if you hire out a car and drive for an hour or two west, there are some more great walks/views and there arent many other tourists.

I guess you know that the natives don't like you climbing the rock, and offer a guided tour around the base instead. Make your own mind up but it's a long way to go and NOT climb it.

doh! just saw you can't drive but if you ask around in Alice you will be able to find a few other backpackers to share with if you want to do that drive I mentioned (can't remember any placenames now!).
There's loads of tour bus competition anyway to keep prices down.
