Running budget games on Win XP

On the packaging of many budget PC games they state that the game won't run on Windpws XP or else they don't mention XP at all in the os requirements section (and so, I assume it's improbable that the game would work on XP).

Is there any way to get such games running on XP? Is there anything like an emulator of earlier versions of Windows that could be run on XP to play these games?

running in compatability mode often works wonders...

right click on the shortcut you use to run the game & choose properties.
switch to the compatability tab & enable windows '95 or '98 compatability.

Yeah, the only problem is you have to buy the game before you get to try it.

I wouldnt bother tbh. I bought AvsP gold edition a while ago, it SAID it ran on XP...what they failed to mention was that it ran like a fu*king three legged dog on xp. A game almost 4 years old or so, that took almost 10 minutes to load a level on my comp, (that runs unreal 2, MP2, BF1942, Vice city etc etc with ease)...thats taking the piss. Personally i wont bother my arse buying a budget game unless its post 2002 from now on.

Many/Most budget games work perfectly. Deus Ex is a good example. When it came out first it tended be sluggish on all but the most powerful machines (PII-450- PIII-600s around then). Now, it flies any vaguely decent machine for the last two years. Works fine on XP. Similarly so does Thief I/II on budget (although you have to get a patch).

Just google on the game and see if anyone has reported problems on it. Thankfully these games don't run too fast like their older counterparts although one or two do still suffer from this slightly. eg Commandos.

A few older games such as Grand Theft Auto probably won't work. Well.... I can get the block vga graphics to work but the D3D/Glide doesn't etc.
