I'm being very snobby, but I heard and loved that song months and months ago, and listened to it all the time during the summer. But now everyone loves it, and it's a Christmas #1 which means in 10 years time it'll be played on Channel 4's 100 one hit wonders or 100 christmas #1's, and it'll be recognised as a novelty song rather than the brilliant song that it is.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! :(

huh? thats number 1? i thought it was between the darkness and some pop idol thing?
not that i was paying much attention so i fully accept i could be wrong..but i really didn't know mad world was in the running. good to hear (both the news and the song..)

i find it kinda funny, i find it kinda sad...etc..etc...:)

I love that song, listened to it the week my ex broke up with me, repeat all day, for 5 days in course. Its not a happy god damn Christmas song, but is beautiful and meaningful.

it was supposed to be, but pop idol only made 5th (which is quite poor considering it was favorite before the song was even recorded).

glad this song got to no 1.... when is the irish chart counted? according to 2FM the current no 1 is will young, please tell me that isnt official....!!!
    But now everyone loves it

i dont see a problem with the masses appreciating good music
I heard and loved that song months and months ago, and listened to it all the time during the summer

good for you, all the more time you had to enjoy this song
it's a Christmas #1 which means in 10 years time it'll be played on Channel 4's 100 one hit wonders or 100 christmas #1's, and it'll be recognised as a novelty song rather than the brilliant song that it is.

i hope it wont be in the one hit wonders top 100, and even if it is in the christmas no 1 chart, so what? its certainly not a novelty song... it doesnt mention christmas and so can be played all year long, and its not something with a limited lifespan like bob the builder or sounds of the underground.... so i wouldnt get too worried. Do you consider the original Happy Xmas (war is over) a novelty song? its a festive song, but no novelty (Mad world escapes both catagories).
the fact is a brilliant song will always be seen as a brilliant song
    I'm being very snobby

at least your big enough to admit it.....:D ;)

yeah, thats the kinda song it is...doesn't seem all that christmasy (that is such a word) really but it is very pretty and i won't mind hearing it over christmas...
hmm, that means i can stick it on a cd and play it in work along with all the christmas **** i've been enduring for the last month (i work in a toy shop :() mad world should make christmas eve bearable in that toyshop-like hell...

yeah, weve had a pretty bum-deal with christmas songs until this year, theyre either annoying christmas crap (such as 'have a cheeky christmas') or irrelevent pop-piss (the afore mentioned sounds of the underground')

this is finally a beautiful and meaningful song that can be listened to at all times.....

on a side note, i was doing some research for a radio show afew weeks ago and i noticed that the last christmas themed song to make no 1 in the UK was the re-release of 'do they know its christmas?' about 11 years ago or so (maybe more).
As far as i know its been less time in Ireland, we've had the joy of Dustin doing re-lyriced cover songs up until about 3 years ago.

Been listening to it for months myself too, don't often see something I listen to make it into the charts, so tis a novelty! :D Just means I get to see the video without having to download it! :D

Personally i'd rather listen to any song throughout the year rather than Mr Blobby, Bob the Builder or the feckin tellitubbies (though dispy is da man!!) when looking back over christmas #1s. For the last few years Christmas #1s have been dominated by the child market of parents buying their kids these songs for christmas or young children buying their first CD and getting whatever's colourful. Finally for the first time in years i'm happy to say that the Christmas #1 is a great song. One that is deserving of the top spot wether at christmas or any other time. I've heard the Darkness' song and it's not too bad, but again that would in itself be a novelty song.

I have to admit though, most favourable songs over christmas for me throughout the years have been "Driving home for christmas" - really gives the whole christmas feeling rather than just the tinsel feeling you get from most other songs!!

Slade "Merry Christmas" - When he shouts out Merry Christmas it reminds me of the energy of the celebration rather than just singing the song for the sake of it

"Grandma Got Runover By a Reindeer" - Probably the greatest Christmas song ever - purely brilliant when you have lyrics like

"So I say to all my neighbours,
    better watch out for yourselves,
They should never give a licence,
to a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves"

I must say that I'm happy that this song made it to Number 1, instead of songs like the Bo Selecta one and the Pop Idols one which were only made so that they could get the Xmas number1.

    Personally, I preffered the darkness.

MadWorld would be less morbid if its lyrics were all substituted for "Im going to kill myself and everyone around me".

Didn't Mad World originally come out as some sort of horrific '80s electro-pop thing? This cover is a decided improvement. And it's actually a good song. About time a good song got to no.1, don't you think?

Tears for Fears did it in the early 80s. I feel soo old.....:p

yea, originally tears 4 fears electronic fare, very crap, cover is way better

A mate bet £20 (Sterling) on it reaching #1 when it was 25/1 and he put some more on it in a seperate bet when it was 16/1.

He told me to do it too, but alas... I'm an idiot.

Wrong, original was better as a new wave song.
This cover is not bad as a ballad though :)

Covers dont always work, just look at Westlife :D

I'm just happy that those pop idol shitheads didn't get #1.

Call me a cynic but I think the fact this beat a drunken christmas singalong classic like the darkness song shows what any english actor who has ever left for the states always says in an intervierw a few years later-that on reflection the sasanach are some miserable gits.
I was actually so sure of the darkness being victorious that I was going to put on 50 quid at 5/1 last week in Norn Iron-glad I didnt get round to it!
As for the rest, the pop idols did a weak cover of a song I never particularly liked,Kelly Osbourne and her oul boy wouldnt have got past number 30 without their tv show and Proper Crimbo shouldve got to number 2 :D

yeah i much prefare this to some pop idol crap.

the original was tears for fears from 1982 i think and its far far from crap, i think both versions work well. tears for fears have some great stuff i think

Any of them would be better than another Cliff Richard Xmas song at the top spot.

BTW, are you referring to UK or ROI charts?

The original is pretty good. Certainly not crap.

Tears for Fears were a great band and are currently getting back together. As well as "Everybody wants to rule the world" they had great hits such as Shout, Sowing the seeds of love, Change, Advice for the young at heart, Head over heels, Woman in chains and Mad World is a great song

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,461 ✭✭✭NeroTheExtreme

They weren't really a band by the time 85 came along. It was just Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith until 90 when Smith left. Orzibal continued to work under the TFF name up til 96.

The reunion will be the first time they have worked together in 13 years.
Mad World was actually one of their first hits. And given it's time, it was damn good.
