Now that Lord of the Rings has finished I have been hearing some statements saying it is better than the Star Wars Trilogy, which I think far far better. What's your favourite trilogy?

Easily Lord of the Rings as all three movies were class.
With 'Star Wars' you've got a sucky 3rd entry that showed all the signs of being a merchandising franchise - fcukin' Ewoks. And - from a technical POV - LOTR movies are better made, in terms of editing, script, acting, etc. I also prefer fantasy to sci-fi but, even critically, LOTR seems lauded as one of the greatest trilogies ever.

As to the Godfather Trilogy - they're well made, but not quite for me. Also Sofia fcuks up the third, which was an entry that didn't need to be made. Therefore the trilogy is devalued.

Matrix trilogy had only one good movie and thus is nowhere close to being a good trilogy.

I like Back to the Future but they're enjoyable rather than being works of technical excellence. Also not a Western fan, so that rules it out 'coz of Part 3.

Indy trilogy is good too, but Temple of Doom is a bit more straight-to-video fare. Still a good series tho'.

One trilogy to win the poll, one trilogy to beat them, one trilogy to top them all, and in the darkness triumph them.

fukin ewoks agreed, but as for technically made theres a 30 odd year difference between the movies, and when star wars came out first it was technical genius, really ground breaking stuff

btw, you left out the evil dead trilogy:(

    (btw, i voted lotr)

there was a 23 year difference between Star Wars and fellowship

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭angelofdeath

oops 7 years out, my bad, point stands tho

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Doesn't matter how many years - I'm not just focusing on editing. I'm also saying that to myself, as part of the modern day cinema, Star Wars - technically (from a directing POV) - is nothing amazing whereas LOTR is. So that's a reason for me to vote it as best trilogy, rather than vote something for legacy reasons (which is why "Citizen Kane" tops critical polls consistently because it was VERY VERY inventive technically).

lordof the rings trilogyis class. great end to a great trilogy.people wondered who would win between them and the matrix for the greater trilogy and for me there is no comparison.

love the matrix aswell but no where near LOTR.
another good trilogy is the Die Hards(For me anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭The_Scary_Man

It's got to be LOTR for me. I think that the Star Wars trilogy is greatly influenced by the fact that most of us saw it as kids and it had a bigger affect on us. A great movie should be able to stand the test of time and the Star Wars storylines are just too weak. Also the Star Wars movies didn't have the level of pressure that the LOTR movies had because of the massive fanbase the books had before the movies were made. If I had to rate them all it would be

    1. Lord Of The Rings - Excellent Storyline, Excellent Direction and bar a slight dip in the second movie maintained a level of quality missing in the others throughout.

    2. The Godfather Trilogy - The first two movies are strong enough to drag the third over the finish line with them. One of the strongest casts ever put together. The Godfather II is one of my top ten movies of all time.

    3. Star Wars - When I was younger I thought they were the greatest movies ever made but now that I cast a more critical eye over them they fall a bit short. Weak storyline and some of the acting is brutal.

    4. Indiana Jones - Classic adventure movies a little bit samey but still a very good trilogy.

    5. The Matrix - This one left a bitter taste in my mouth. It started out with so much potential but let us all down. I can only hope that they don't follow through on their threat to make another. In fact I'd almost put the Alien trilogy ahead of this one the second and third movies were so bad. At least Aliens was an improvement on the original.

doing this poll right now is a bit of a waste of time.

everyone is high on lotr after just seeing rotk, you'd need the dust to settle and to wait about a year or two before getting some proper perspective on it.

That said. I voted lotr. Just to piss you off davey.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭angelofdeath

ok your opinion ioxy, but some of the filming techniques in star wars had never been done before, and imho still satnd up as being really believable today

(scaryman, love the sig but i think you'll be done for it, just a friendly word of advice)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭The_Scary_Man

Cheers angelofdeath. Nobody's said anything yet. I'll remove it if I'm asked, I like him though, crazy little bstard.

agreed from a directing pov sw is nothing amazing, but neither is lotr, whats amazing about it from directing pov ?, take out all the fx and you've just got a run of the mill story that could have been made 4 tv

and 2 whoever posted this poll there should have been an other option, theres alot of trilogies out there, whos to say the best is in those 5

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Well the SFX have to count from a directing POV - having huge epic scenes that still let you keep the characters in perspective. Certain scenes - say Helm's Deep in the Two Towers - look far grander than anything committed to screen in a long time, if ever (never mind those in RotK). SFX or not, it's the directing that decides how best to edit these together and make it look epical rather than - as with Episode II - an SFX showcase.

Anyway, I still think Indiana Jones should be in this poll - reservations about Temple of Doom aside, it's a very very good trilogy also.

help me out here, does anyone recognise the name Sergio Leone??

i mean, yez're talkin' about trilogies and his name hasn't even been aluded to??
there is somethin wrong with the world when westerns are forgotten.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

I hate Westerns - always have. But it's already been mentioned that there's honorables missing: Indiana Jones, for example, and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly trilogy - as you point out. I'm sure there are others as well! Just gotta work with what little is there and vote for Lord of the Rings :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

L.O.T.R. Balls..... Sergio Leone yea heard of him, once or twice ;)

What about Die Hard, Beverly hill cop.... Lethal weapon..... ETC ETC.... Fair enough may not be the best triology EVAR but they should be in the poll.... I for one hate LOTR, Starways and the Matrix..... out of those listed it would have to be godfather TBH.

    John

    P.S. Pointless poll

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭Sauron

LOTR without a doubt.. all 3 films great... these polls will always miss out on some peoples favourites but I think its clear LOTR is the one most would've and did vote for..

    Jaws Trilogy
    Omen Trilogy
    Trois Coleurs

    EDIT:
Beverley Hills Cop 3 was pants., 1 and 2 were excellent though.

    Indy tbh

    That is all

LOTR because most films dissapoint me in their ending, these didn't....

good bit back to 2nd place
SW original trilogy in spite of the Ewoks

I don't rate Matrix at all, pt 1 was excellent, 2 was sh1te, I haven't even seen 3 yet I was so dissapointed with 2

A trilogy I was fond with, all with great acting was Oliver Stone's Vietnam 3 part
Platoon, Born on 4th.., Heaven & Earth, all great films with different perspective.
Would place this in third place

no room for anymore on the podium, out with the Champs

Out of the choice given I voted for LOTR Mainly for the reasons already given.

But saying that I would have voted for Sergio Leone's The man with no name trilogy. A fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and finally The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

A rare thing in trilogy's for the third movie to be the best of the three

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 93,579 Mod ✭✭✭✭Capt'n Midnight

In the order of the setting of the story it's
The good the bad and the ugly - one of my favorite films / Fistful of dollars / Few dollars more. - Sergio and Ennio

    Then there is this trilogy
Yojimbo / Fistful of dollars / last man standing
But while Sergio copied Kirasawa scene by scene it was different in just so many original ways - both are classics.

As for silence of the lambs - none of them match the original Manhunter (Michael Mann)

Havn't seen them - but the three coulours.. Red White Blue - Wasn't he the guy that did the Ten Commandments in Polish Apartment block - very good.

Thumbs up for Indiana Jones / StarWars - Harrison Ford

Do the black and white Godzilla films count as a trilogy ?

Then there is the Jaws trilogy - Lets just pretend only the first film was ever made.

Emm, did some guy not write the whole story in a book a few years back? Sort of takes all the surprise out of LOTR imo.

I voted Star Wars as it defined my generation and I still go back and watch the films regularly. I watched my Fellowship DVD once and don't even know where it is now. George Lucas was/is not an author, he conceived the story to be played out on screen and made it happen. Tolkein on the other hand was a genius author who knew and mastered his craft. Peter Jackson has created three cinematic masterpieces but, at the end of the day, is only a translator, one medium to another.

Also say something that George has two entries.

lol, thats putting him in his place. yeah jackson didn't have to do anything, his job was piss easy, whereas lucas is some sort of god for the absolute masterpiece he came up with.

star wars has so-so script so-so acting etc. as films they're not as accomplished as any of the lotr's. Star Wars only stands a chance in this pole because as you said - it defined a generation. If you take the nostalgia out, star wars is three alright-ish films with some great ideas. (that said, I love 'em) LOTR are better films, in that, i think that it's acting editng, script etc. come off better as a whole.

The idea that a film based on a book isn't as much as an achievement as one that isn't is rubbish. The Godfather? Fight Club anyone? (And there's about a million other ones.)

Also, comparing Lucas with Jackson in the case of the trilogies is a nonsense in part, considering Lucas only directed one out of the three star wars.

'Only a translator.' That really takes the biscuit for understatement.

Thats kinda of a difficult question to ask at the moment, with the memory of LOTR so fresh in people's mind you are obviously going to get a biased result! Having said that I was really conflicted, much and all as I was impressed by the LOTR trilogy I loved both Star Wars and Back to the Future as a kid, however I had to opt for the Godfather! The corleonis are my family!!!

Whats up with the Matrix? Did nobody like it!? I thought that was the best trilogy. The best thing about it is all the unanswered questions, which can be bad but it works for me!

I thought the trilogy was great with its special effects, fight scenes and breathtaking car chases.I know the trilogy raises as many questions as it answers (especially in Reloaded) but its great discussing all the possible answers after the film.

I saw LOTR last night. I had read the trilogy and thought it was great but i hadnt seen the 1st two films. It was 3hrs of bull****. I was dying to get out of the cinema. It was completely dissappointing. I cant see how so many people voted for it as their fave trilogy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

What about the Dead(Night of the living dead, Dawn of the dead and Day o fthe Dead) trilogy? I know they're not strictly sequels but nonetheless widely considered and accepted as a 'trilogy'.

Meh anyway Star Wars gets my vote.

Well you hadn't seen the first two movies for starters! It's basically the same as walking into a regular movie two-thirds of the way through. No wonder you didn't enjoy it. You do realise it's one story yeah? Not three seperate stories?

As to how you though it was bullsh1t - well, as said, you've missed 2/3 of the full movie. Now, why did you think it was bad from a film-making POV? We can list why the Matrix movies are awful but c'mon, list why it's technically bad rather than you just didn't like it.

Oh and folks - just seen "Cold Mountain". RotK has some TOUGH competition come Oscar time. This has Best Picture - and a host of other awards - written all over it. And even worse - it's actually bloody good :)

Yeah i think what u mean. I know its not three seperate stories!, thats pretty much why i thought it was crap coz hard to understand most of it.

I think i'll watch the full trilogy bfore i comment again hehe.

    Still thought Matrix was great!

So you read the books and claim to enjoy them, yet you decide not to go to one of the biggest movie event of previous years and claim to be confused by a story which you have read and enjoyed. Such a silly boy.

Yess, my main point of posting in the 1st place was to question why hardly nobody was voting for the Matrix as the best trilogy. I just decided to mention that i saw the 3rd movie of LOTR and i decided to say what i think of it.

Yeah it should be. I have Aliens only so far, but I've just ordered Alien and Alien 3 in play.com's special offer on the series. Thus, as you know, completes the Alien series currently available so far.

It still baffles me to this day, how did the director of the superb Amelie get Resurrection (note the lack of the word "Alien" in the title) so very wrong?

I seriously doubt AvP will be a worthy sequel either. *sigh*

Anyways, yeah Alien is definately in the top 3 all time best trilogies.
