Should the Internet be banned?

After the whole German cannibal saga and the way illegal sex that is polluting the interweb I can't help but see the Internet being banned in about 10 years. Illegal goods and open chat about illegal subjects are too commonplace on the world wide net. Perverts roam the place looking for victims, or spend their free time glued to the Internet, while they should be in studying for a course for example. I know I would get a lot more work done without the Internet, although I would be reluctant to admit it because it can be entertaining and good for information.

    What do y'all think? ;)

I think it's another bad attempt at trolling.

That is ridiculous - a ban would just drive it underground and ensure that it was *only* used for dodgy activities.

Like any other medium, it can be abused but overall, its effects are beneficial.

(Just in case it's not a troll).

L4 I would say that you have touched a nerve!!!
Personally, I doubt that it will ever be banned, but like everything, it does good and bad, helps a lot of people and causes others harm. And I would not like it to be banned...actually, it shows us Irish how badly we are been ripped off over here!!!
I am just gonna sit back and watch this space, cos the discussion on this should be interesting!

I wonder would some sort of effective policing work better. As it stands I doubt that there is much emphasis placed on any online crime or dodgy activities but maybe if countries started to take the internet a bit more seriously and have dedicated (and sufficently funded) departments with the responsibility of dealing with ecrime that certain problems might in the fullness of time, all things considered, find that such crime should naturally take the same popularity as normal crime. So there.

The internet is just Society itself. It is the reflection of all parts of global society. You cannot ban society itself even if you dont like a part of it. And even if it is banned (illegal) you cannot stop it. By "banning" the intrawab you willl not stop it. You cannt stop it. It has grown to the point where it is required by the majority of people (and business) worldwide.

Just because you dont like a part of the internet just means you dont like that part of society.

    **Not a 'troll'**
Yes but Robo, 100yrs ago Cocaine was legal and did good and bad, until they realised that it did more bad than good. I don't think it would really work underground. It'd be too easy to trace and their aren't that many pervs that are conputer whizs to keep it going. Look at all those fools who get caught buying illegal material by credit card over the Interweb! Hardly geniuses now are they?
Plus it would cut back on the geeks. More and more people are becoming computer nerds and spending their weekends surfing the net. It's a bit drastic, but in 10yrs or so, it may be nessesary. I know, you'll have your student protesting that they can't get info and help with homework online, but come on, pre-1990 most students had to study without the aid of the Internet. It has bred lazy generations of students since 1996ish. But I hope it doesn't get banned.

Printing presses produce propaganda, news, bigotry, racism, hobbies, interests, filth.....the list goes on. You can't ban printing presses though for the fact that there are instances that it gets used for illegal or imoral products.

The internet has always been labeled as the information highway, but it also has the personality of every person using it. You can't blame the tools for the bad worker!!

Besides this is just too stupid to talk about really. Yeah ban all TV cause of playboy TV - Boooo hissss.

Well you could spend a lot of time stating what we hadn't got 10, 15, 20 years ago, that we now have...and that is always going to happen. And in fairness it is not just students who use it.
Do you know what, I would say that it is a life line to a lot of people out there. especially anyone in a minority, of any sort, who don't personally know of anyone in the same situation etc...and I know beofre anyone comes back and says paedophiles...they are one group...there are millions of others who felt that they had some unique situation, tendancy, thoughts etc...well now they can share them with like minded people. When you take away the badness of the net, there is more good involved.
it provides, entertainment, information, and loads more to people who want them. But maybe it could be policed a bit better, I dunno how though...that would be a big job.
And there shall always be nerds who use it all the time, just like there are people who can sit down and watch 1 tv programme a week and then there are couch potatos who do nothing but watch the box!!!

For the consumer I think that it does only good, we can shop around the world now and save a lot of money!

You cant blame the net for you not getting any studying done or enough work done. Its your own problem if you find that the case. You might aswell ban TV, Radio, Music and the book I'm reading at the moment too.

    L4 for president!!!

But why stop at banning the 1nt0rw3b. Cars kill people. Cars are used in bank robberies. Lets ban cars.

Hang on, lets not do things by half. Since knowledge is used for bad things, lets ban all knowledge. Burn every book, picture, cd, video, dvd, etc.

People should be ignorant. Then only ignorance is bad.

Yeah ... I propose we back L4 for president once assurities are given that *ALL* knowledge is banned,

no way should the internet be banned ffs, it has so many benefits in terms of commerce and communication, it'd just be plain daft to ban it, police it maybe, but don't be rediculous, pfft ban the internet:mad:

Cars, guns and drugs don't kill people.
    People kill people.

The internet is a tool which enhances communication. What people choose to communicate has nothing to do with the internet. It is all to do with human nature, and choice.

You cannot prevent or ignore developments in technology. They will continue to happen whether you try to control them or not. You cannot switch off the internet. The internet is not a group of servers anymore. It is every device which is in some way connected to the greater concept of the internet.

Ban back streets and street markets.

You know it mocks sense. Let's take out VCRs and playgrounds while we're at it.
