Towns (like Drogheda )without cable

Ive always wondered why Drogheda doesnt have Cable TV. Its a large enough place and there are many parts of the town that cant recieve the UK channels on an aerial

Was there ever a franchise awarded for the place I know Chorus have a lot of franchises like Ennis, Castlebar Carragaline and (I think) Nenagh that they have franchises for (in some cases for over 20 years) but havent bothered doing anything with.

Similarly in NI there are many towns in which a cable network would be feasable but NTL despite having the franchise for NI only seem to be interested in providing a service to parts of Belfast and L'Derry while down in Dublin there are many places (particularly in the South east of the city) where NTL dont seem to be interested in servicing

If they arent prepared to offer their "service" in these areas the licence should be readvertised and offered to some other outfit who might actually be prepared to do something with it. And to think spokespeople from these companies have the nerve to try and portray deflectors as cowboy outfits !

Any town above a certain size should have a franchise which should be advertised if not taken up by an operater. If no major company is willing to supply the market then a deflector op should be licened...its the sort of thing a local radio station could do on the side or maybe a newspaper but there are proberly laws against that sort of thinking!

I presume the reason why Drogheda is not cabled is it's proximity to Northern Ireland and the ability to receive BBC/ITV with a rooftop aerial. Prior to the advent of sports and movie channels most people subscribe to CATV or MMDS to get BBC/ITV stations and I suspect the operators thought why bother cable Drogheda when they can stick up an aerial and get these channels for free.

Most of Drogheda is in a rut, it cant recieve BBC/UTV via analogue. The north end of the town is fine, but not at street level.

If it has a cable franchisee, it is Chorus. However looking through the ICDG website and CMI's old website (thanks waybackmachine.org !) it does not seem that there was ever a cable licence awarded to the area. Not to CMI, and I would suspect not to Irish Multichannel either. Both were subsumed into Chorus.

Independent Wireless Cable Limited (East Coast Multichannel) would have had the MMDS franchise for the area I should think. This is now also part of Chorus.

At this stage, if not MMDS then Sky is available as an option anyway.

I thought the idea of franchise areas had been done away with back in 2002. Either NTL or Chorus or any other company is free to set up in Drogheda if they feel it is worth it.
