So am i right in saying that there is no point converting my MP3's on my pc to AAC with a convertor i.e. only really works if i have the original cd?

The general idea is that aac retains more information from the original cd - it loses less. However, if mp3 have already been encoded from a cd you cannot gain anymore information than is already in the mp3. So aac encoded from mp3 could only at best achieve the quality of the mp3s.
