    wine and winex.

I've actually got Office 2k, IE 6 with MSjvm installed in my nix environment. Why I would do such a thing, well why not.

I'm running fedora core 1, with some custom stuff compiled in. Looks good, its nice to be able to use word when i click on word doc in linux.

Are you running Debian - and can you use IE addons / Plug ins ?
If so how do you set it up..

What is the point of running Linux if you're going to use IE/Word?

I'm not having a go, but, seriously.

Mozilla on Linux provides enough bells and whistles these days to satisfy even the worst eye-candy junkies...

Moreover, between Open Office (which is slow I know), Abiword, Gnumeric, Koffice and Evolution, you have a 'complete' (near to anyway) replacement for all the kludgiest ... 'feature rich' M$ apps.

Without the ridculous upgrade cycle, nor the arbitrary costs.

    *bump*

    Why use IE ?
Unlike windows it does not need a license.
And lots of "soultions" can use IE as a thin client - but since many are based on M$ develoment tools you can't use Mozilla / netscape / opera etc. instead :(

PS. vmware ain't exactly free is it ? - $299 electronic distribution
    https://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/index.jsp
(after 90 days) VMware now offers pay-per-request support for only $90 per Support Request.
I take it there is no substitute as yet..

cf. http://plex86.sourceforge.net/ - VM linux on linux

LOL - well its all running under wine.

The reason for IE, is AIB online banking for my business. If i didn't have that I'd not use it. :)

Lets be honest here, word is a very good word processor. Excel is a very good spreadsheet program etc.

Outlook has those quirky features I've always liked, and it's more mature than a lot of other email programs.

And the main reason to do all this, because I can :D

I personally don't think so. When I change printers, Word lays the page out differently. That's inexcusable! It's especially bad when I have a 2-page document that I print on two sides of an A4 sheet: one side is mono, so it makes more sense to print it on the laser. I actually sent a few of these to clients before I realised that Word was screwing up the layout and losing about two lines in the process.

Well some of my colleagues picked up vmware3 for the cost of postage ($7)

Only works well with the older versions of the distros of course

Then throw a HP printer driver into the mix - looks ok on screen WYSIWYG, mar dhea - having to arse around with margins just to get the printer to print... (Even happens with SHARP photocopiers emulating HP's)

I've always used Netscape for AIB online banking and never had a problem.

    IBB business banking ?

The Crux of this is, the business banking uses the MsJVm which will not run on any linux browser.

IBB gets upset when Sun Java is installed on the Machine ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,740 ✭✭✭mneylon

You have to disable the sun java to use IBB!!
    It's all a bit mental.
AIB sends you the CD to test your PC and then informs you of what you need to update. If you are running XP Pro with the Sun Java installed you have to get a link from somebody to the defunct MS Java thing... Talk about retarded

Oh you mean msjavx86 which is quite hard to find on the net these days... - must try and see if it works....

PS. when I tried to run Explorer in Wine - it went full screen - how do you kill an app in Debian ???

Open another console screen and run top. Find the PID number for wine, quit top, and enter 'kill [PID]' at the command line e.g.

    kill 123

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,740 ✭✭✭mneylon

    ps -auxwww
find the pid, then kill it or kill -9 it
