Broadband pings

I got broadband last week. It gave my laptop a lovely bunch of viruses, my own fault is not keeping my virus protection up to date.
As a result, I updated everything on my machine and installed a personal firewall.

My question: why do addresses, seemingly from a similar address range to the on given to me by NTL, keep pinging my machine. Is it legitimate trafic from NTL. Is it something that should happen. I've had my scare and am wary of letting anyone or anything have any access to my machine again.

On Digital - nice to see new channels, cmon SSXtra - and I still only have v5.26. It never updated >> any ideas.

    Cheers,
    NeverHappy

I got NTL BB recently, and I got attacked viciously by Viruses, Trojans and the like. I had good protection set up, but I was taken aback by the sheer number of attempts.

Don't know if its true, but I suspect that the IP range(s) used by NTL are more prone to attack for some reason. Maybe because NTL are an international outfit with presences in many countries. I know that IP addresses are neutral, but I didn't get anything like the same number of attempts when I was using eircom i-Stream, which had "Irish" IP addresses.

I wouln't trust any of these intruders. Unless they are Kazaa or other P2P users, they have no reason to be snooping round your system. If you block too many valid connections, you'll soon find out and can fix it.

I had them problems for a while too, but on the ntlworld.com site they have a virus checker & blocker here which has a handy step by step guide which fixes your system. I haven't had any problems since.

AFAIK, the only box that got the update to v5.36 was the DI4001, they don't seem to be updating either of the other 2 boxes.

    why dont you use ZoneAlarm?

that's the best personal firewall i've ever seen

also regarding the viruses, i strongly recommend you to use this:

    free software by Computer Associates.
