    1.00 pm Breaking News

The editor of the Irish Times Geraldine Kennedy has terminated the contract of regular columist John Waters in the wake of his "spiked" item critising the behaviour of the Irish Times board namely its golden handcuff pension for ex editor Conor Brady and payments by the board to itself.

I'd love to know if Kennedy did this off her own bat or
if she was forced to by the IT Board. If the latter then she should have resigned.

    Mike.

I think the Irish Times will regret the loss.

But I think that John Waters will be snapped up another publication.

I can easily see him going over to the made-over Sunday Trib or the Business Post, as if they haven't enough embittered ex-Times hacks already.

Good point, mike65. If Kennedy was pressured into sacking him, it just re-confirms what Waters got fired for in the first place.

Yeah thats what I thought the Trib would be a good home in particular...

I'm amazed this thread has got such little traffic...!

    Anyway more breaking news!

The IT editor Geraldine Kennedy has re-instated John Waters after a "frank candid and friendly" discussion
    this afternoon.

Proberly a case of two talents misreading one anothers intentions.....

    Mike.

It wasn't just Waters and Kennedy there, someone from the NUJ was also present. I'd like to think the phrase "we'll take you to court and under court privilege we'll reveal everything that was in the article you wouldn't print and it'll be on the front page of the Indo for a week" was used. Or summat similar.

I tend to think of Waters as a bit of a prat for playing the "I came from the poor side of Castlerea" (has anyone seen the size of the place - you can spit from Knockroe to the other side (which must be the poor side Waters refers to:rolleyes: as he's made it clear he came from the opposite end) card rather regularly but the Times made rather a large booboo on this one.

I heard that Harry Browne (radio reviewer) was let go for being too radical in his views and that the paper wanted to tone down anything that could be interpreted as anti-Americanism (hence printing stuff by Mark Steyn so they can say they are unbiased) because they were afraid of losing advertising revenue from American companies.

    Any truth here, d'ye think?

Yes, I'm also surprised how little attention this thread attracted. Wake up ppl!

Working in Castlerea there is a devide allright between the two areas... but still id hardly call the other side of Castlerea a ghetto....

He also has a great ability to get the best out of an incident leaving the other party the looser!

What "embittered" ex-Times hacks do the SBP employ??

It was Phoenix Magazine that stated Harry Browne had been let go because of his 'Anti-American' views. Whether or not that was the reason, it's certainly the case that his was the only voice raising concerns over censorship issues in the media today.

His replacement, Bernice Harrison, has previously submitted articles on the hard hitting topic of marketing. Should be a review column of razor sharp discernment, without a doubt. <Sigh!>
