the smoking ban is due to come into place soon. i personally think that this is a good idea, even if it might not be implimented in the best way.

the thing im interested in is that if the ban is successful should the next step be to ban smoking outdoors?

it would mean that the only place someone could smoke would be in their house. i think it would certainly be a good way to encourage not smoking. would it work?

No it wouldn't work. It's a rediculous idea.

next step is to just make it illegal like most other recreational drugs

Maybe if the government were to do that then they should supply free nicorette patches to everyone trying to give up from all the tax they have taken off us for a packet of cigarettes . No point in trying to pretend smokers don't exsist i'm sure most people who smoke wish they had never started and and now when addicted
it costs a lot of money and no easy way to give up ! No point in just banning something that alot of people rely on you have to in my opinion have more measures in place to help them also

actually all those substances you mention are the same thing, alcohol. you may be surprised to know that it is actually legal though restrictions are in place. you may also be amazed to know a recreational drug called caffeine is also legal still. but MOST recreational drugs are illegal, i could list a fraction of them but i would be here all day typing.

I think the government should ban all drugs including alcohol and caffeine. Think of the increased productivity of the economy. It would be great. We would then be able to work all the time. Why waste our time enjoying ourselves? We could be just like robots.

A Caffiene ban would bring productivity way down.
    Duh.

There are very few caffeine releated deaths per year.
The same cannot be said for alcohol releated deaths.

    i dont get your point.
cannabis has never had a recorded death but is illegal, the harm a drug causes has little to do with its legality, LSD has no fatal dose. look at ecstacy, very few deaths per year among millions of users, with many taking huge doses, actaully proves what a safe drug it is but is still illegal, paracetomol has far more accidental and allergic fatalities per year as a % of users. but one death makes headlines by the gutter press, the family of the victim goes on tv warning people, where are the family of the paracetomol victims?

Does anyone have a link to a Gov specified date as to when this is to be implemented.

The Smokers here are trying to convince us that its been postphoned for a year.
www.doh.ie has nothing I can find that mentions dates.

Is this true... I thought it was to come into effect February or something.

In part because (a) specific records aren't kept (b) it is difficult to tell lung / throat / Mouth cancers from cannabis smoking from the same cancer from tobacco smoking.

Would you trust a bus driver on LSD?
