Dual boot problem RH8 and WinXp

    Hello there,

Well over the weekend I installed RH8 on a friends computer.

    The problem is as follows....
His setup before I got started.
He had four partitions one for WinXp and the other 3 for storage and that.
<edit> forgot to mention that its a Compaq computer, span new and the hd is 120gig</edit>
I used PM8 to create a 5gig partition at the end of the disk. (this currently contains the 3partitions for boot / and swap)

Then I installed linux. (had to leave half way through the installation and forgot to mention about creating a boot disk so no boot disks were made)

When the install was complete he rebooted his system and grub appeared no problems. He choose to boot into WinXp. WinXp complained about needing a System Recovery but he managed to excape from doing this. He rebooted the system again but this time there was no grub.

What happened to grub?? I'm thinking that windows overwrote the MBR or something to that effect but why?? How can I get grub to reappear?? If I have to re-intall how can I prevent this from happening again?? I've had no problems previously dual-booting with Win98, WinMe and Win2000.

    Thanks,
    A.

At Red Hat install cd prompt.

    Type

    linux mount root=/dev/hda(somenumber)

issue the command grub once booted

    tell grub to install itself.

    Pay me five dollars.

    That is all.

also to get winxp booting again you need to replace two files in the c: dir, ntldsr i sone i think, and ntdetect, get them from the cd (so boot linux mount cd mount windows cp them over) hey presto kids!
