I had a look at my Dads drivers licence over the weekend and it appears that it is over 2 years expired!

Can he just go to the Garda station and sign a form to get a new one or does he have to do a driving test?

Officially, he has to do the test again but they MAY let him away without re-sitting the test.
But then, two years is a long time out of date.

he didn't do the test the first time round either ;)

who makes the decision? the gards or the tax office?

You have 10 years from the date of expiry to apply for a new licence.

He can just go to the local tax office/garda station/post office, fill out the forms, hand in his old licence, and wait a few weeks for it to come back to him.

    Hi,

If it's a Full licence, he has 10 years from the date of expiry to renew it.

If it's a Provisional, he has 5 years.

Just fill out a renewal form, hand in the old licence, 2 pictures, the money, and, if required, a medical report (if he's over 70 or has trucks/buses on it).

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Tommy.
