Windows XP Pro. Problems with Q updates

    A few weeks back I noticed in Add/Remove programs that four updates, namely, Q329048, Q329115, Q329390 and Q329834, we showing up as occupying almost 1.2Gb of space between them!

    This updates are tiny. A few kb each, as I recall, so I thought that something was awry.

    I uninstalled them and then went to Windows Update. It detected that they were missing and prompted me to download them and reinstall, which I did. Same problem. They were showing up as 333Mb each!

    I mailed MSFT Online support and they told me to do the following:

    "Step 1
    ====
    1. Open My Computer, and then browse to the following location: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Catroot2

    2. Right-click the Catroot2 folder, and then click Delete.

    Step 2
    ====
    Please install the four updates from links below:

    Q329048 http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/Release.asp?ReleaseIDC419

    Q329115
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId680

    Q329390
    http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId_BE7AF2-2653-4767- A85D-24BF68D28D20

    Q329834 http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/Release.asp?ReleaseIDC635"

    After I did the installation, I checked in Add/Remove programs. Nothing whatsoever! There was no trace of the four Qs.

    MSFT's next suggestion was:

    "I suggest downloading them to the hard disk and then install the updates in Safe Mode to test this issue. To start Windows in Safe Mode, please follow these steps:

    1. Please turn on or restart the computer. While your computer is booting up, please keep pressing the F8 key to invoke the startup menu. 2. In the startup menu, choose Safe Mode."

    Same thing. No sign of them.

    I did note one thing though..............when I was installing them, for each one I got the following:

    "Completing the Windows XP Q329048 Setup Wizard. You have successfully completed the Q329048 Setup Wizard. To close the wizard, click Finish."

    When I click Finish, that's it. The window closes. It nevers says, "You have successfully *installed* the file, only that, "you have successfully completed the setup wizard".

    So, I suspect that no installation was actually taking place. And I have no idea where they are on my computer.

    But, equally, if they are not installed, then Windows Update should be picking up on that. It isn't.

    Very, very odd.

    Meanwhile, my MSFT help has gone AWOL. Not a squeak for two weeks. Equally odd!

    Anyone who can solve this one, I will be mightily impressed!

    Ta.
