Your machine clearly has issues if it takes up 8% CPU just playing an MP3.... Win2k reports that I get about 2.5% CPU usage playing MP3s, on a P2-400...

Oh of course, I haven't loaded half the mb drivers yet and the sound card is a piece of $hit. Plus I just chucked the drive (2 year old ide drive) from my old Pc into it, until I get a new drive.

But configuring and optimising it will be half the fun smile.gif

BTW, I wasn't saying that K7s don't rock (they do), just that your MP3-playing stats suck (they do)...

Yeah I'm just impressed cos my 200mmx system used 25%.
3D Mark 99 gave it 6120. Anybody else use this or is there a better measuring program out there?

I went for the Voodoo 3500 TV. I know tnt2 ultra is faster but I wanted all the Tv/DVD stuff and I reckoned that the K7 would pick up the slack as it were.

And I'm pretty happy with it. Q3t is super fluid at 1024x768 and basically stays at 100fps when offline. There was some initial probs with the textures, but after installing 3dfx's mini-opengl drivers and changing to the default opengl setting in Q3 it was cured.
Q3 also seems to support the 3dnow extensions.

The only niggling factor that I have with it is the sound card (built into the Asus K7M motherboard) which doesn't seem to handle the high quality settings in most of the games I've tried (Q2,Q3,Half-life, Unreal, Tribes) and starts breaking up when things get hectic. I'm going to put the Soundblaster Live! value card from my old system in to see if it improves.

Of course the main bottleneck is my crappy harddrives (a mottley collection of old scsi and ide drives) so Scan are sending me an IBM-GXP 'Titan-2' ATA-66 7200 rpm, so that should speed things up. And I'm going to wait until (or if) ram prices come down a bit before I upgrade from 128mb.

I'd recommend buying from www.scan.co.uk, the prices are good and delivery, while not free, is usually a couple of days. Also the sales staff know what they're talking about so you can ask them "will part x work with part y?" type questions and get reliable answers.

#include standard disclaimer about not working for said company wink.gif

    25%? Sweet jesus.

You obviously have/had one of the many, many systems which Winamp runs like a dog on. I've become less and less impressed with Winamp as the various versions go on, because the player performance has been sacrificed in lieu of features like a mini-webbrowser and other such ****e.

I suggest you have a look at K-Jofol.... I haven't used Winamp since I got it. www.kjofol.org is the site, I think. It's a lot faster and more reliable than Winamp.... top breeders recommend it.... in tests, 9/10 cats preferred it... and I say it's good too, so it must be. Right?
