    Can anyone recommend a good [free] dvd ripper. The i have atm does the job but its not great.

    DvdDecryptor here .. always works a charm

    I use it to burn DVD's also

    DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper. Smartripper is more flexible if you don't want the entire movie.
