A guy in work told me it is possible to claim back any tax from purchases in the US. Has anyone heard of this or done it?

    thanks

but I do know that the amount of tax on purchases varies from state to state. So in some places you will pay no taxes on clothing purchases.

First of all how do you know this, is it on a site or something?

Do I just say to the person in a shop in the States? Eh, i dont want to pay tax, and then i dont?

I hope you are smarter than than the impression that post gives of you.

I think you'll find its a tax-back type of scheme. Fill in some forms at the airport hand it in with receipts, wait a few moons and receive a percentage of it back into your account.

The exact same thing is done for American tourists here. They fill out a form at a desk in the airport and wait for the refund.

The tax on clothes is something like 10 or 12 percent in New York but if you go into Jersey there is none. Thats why they have the factory outlets in New Jersey.

I have never claimed back the tax myself. Just couldnt be bothered.

Well, I'm smarter than the average bear.

So, it's as simple as keeping the reciepts from purchases made? Does this include electrical goods, clothing and so on...?
Have many people claimed back the tax, and have they noticed a significant saving?

I ask this because my impression was that "the states" had lower prices for goods than here in Ireland.
