Can't play mp3s in Xmms

Well hello there,

Got a small problem. Xmms refuses to play mp3's that I have on a second harddrive. The partition is of Fat32filesystem.

I added a line to fstab to allow users to be able to mount the second harddrive and have read write access to it which is as follows....

/dev/hdb1 /mnt/maxtor vfat noauto,user,owner 0 0

I rebooted the computer and logged in as a normal user. Right clicked on desktop and went to Disks>Maxtor and mounted the second harddrive. Then I went to play one of the mp3's and had no joy. Xmms just opens up the window for to add a file to play and if I choose another of the mp3's it just appears to ignore me. I am getting no error messages and I am at a loss as to what is causing this.

Anyone have any idea??

I think you need to install the mp3 plugin for xmms, it does not install as default.

For a very silly moment there I had forgotten about Google. There is definately something wrong with me.

Thanks for the info Kone. It's a bit ridiculous though that what you would assume is an mp3 player doesn't come with mp3 support by default. And mpg123 isn't installed with RH8 (forgot to mention what version I'm running, sors) Causes me more hassle that I don't need!!! Copyrights eh!!

This is just baffling me altogether. So the rpm for the plugin is also freely available and it takes a meer click of the rpm on freshrpms.net to get it. SO why on earth is it not just installed by default is beyond me! If anyone can explain that it'd be great..

There's no such thing b3t4. You need to check again. Let me know if you need any help.

It's a licencing issue. Have a look at this Google query for some pertinent details, but the long and the short of it is that MP3 is non-free, which doesn't (or rather /didn't/) fit with Red Hat's schema. So they took it out.

(FYI, if you use the console a lot in Red Hat, this is another handy fix.)

Fact is, Red Head discontinued libmp3 support as at version 8.0.

Afaik, fixing this is as simple as downloading the rpm from else where and installing it.

Well thanks for all the info.

I've got the rpm (got it earlier but forgot to mention it). Hopefully I'll be able to play the mp3's with no more worries. My computer has taken a dislike to my music of late.

Also on the idea of linux girlys. There be a few of us around alright. eth0_ being the example typedef put forward and I know a few others myself.

Yes I am a girl, why there is such fuss over it is beyond me. I am also studying Computer Systems in college and there are around 15 or so other girls.

As to do with the mp3's I installed the rpm last night and everything is working great :-)

Busy sorting out my printer now. (I'm searching google to try and get RH to print more doc's than ps ones) so if anyone as an insight into that it'd be great.

It's pathetic. Nerds that normally wouldn't open their mouth to a girly gather round like moths to a flame, trying to impress with their geeky useless knowledge and ever-shrinking gadgets. I've seen it in person and it scared me. You shouldn't go to any geeky meetings, instead you should come down to Cork and meet CLUG and CorkWAN on Tuesdays in the Long Island bar on Washington Street, we're the best.

Last week we compared and contrasted the Ericsson T800 and T900's and the week before we had a fascinating debate about Solaris on x86, plus of course every week there's an enlightening discussion about the various positions you can arrange yourself into while having sex with a donkey, and round-table accusations of gheyness.

By the way, I've got a really tiny phone, would you like to see it?

There weren't any. Donncha used to organise the meetings but they kind of stopped happening. Two or three of used to meet every week though, and I invited people along. Much to my surprise some of them came. It usually good fun, although you have to have thick skin.
