Recommended adsl modem for Linux/eircom

I've a linux [SuSE 8.2Pro] gateway, proxy server with NIC & ISDN card which currently allows a small office of win98 and XP machines to connect to internet. Linux does firewalling and email as well.

Tomorrow I'm meeting with Eircom rep and want to sign up for one of the lower i-stream/solo deals. The rep has said she knows nothing about Linux nor when I asked the specific make/model of modems & routers on offer. She did tell me a static IP was availible (for a fee) on solo service.

Can anyone recommend a linux/eircom friendly modem/router - I'd be happy to let all traffic go tru linux box but the option to directly connect 1 or 2 windows boxes to the adsl service would be nice in an emergency. I'd like to keep cost under e250 but it's not critical.

Is there a device that eircom provides that I should 'avoid like-a da plague' ;-|

Sorry if this sounds dumb - I'm very new to adsl service - not so common (yet) in the west.

maybe take a look over on the broadband forum http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=259 for a list of routers / modems that people are using. Also, it might be worth your while to look into other providers (ESAT / IOL, UTV, Netsource) to see if you'll get a better deal (look in broadband or IrelandOffline http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=60)

Are you going for ADSL (i-stream solo and up) or RADSL (i-stream starter)?

If you're already using the linux box as a firewall and router, I'd suggest getting a bog-standard ethernet (R)ADSL modem and plugging that into a spare network card in the linux machine. USB drivers a pain, IMHO...

I have a Netgear DM602 and it's working fine with Red Hat 9. It's set up by default as a router, but I used it as a modem for a short while one day and it was fine that way too -- I used Webmin to set it up. Only problem so far is two seemingly random disconnects, but I think it's probably quite likely that was on the ISP side. Rebooting the Netgear solved it on both occasions anyway. Bought it at DSL Warehouse, got it pretty quickly, happy enough. If it keeps behaving itself, I'm going to buy a WGT624 to keep it company. :)

    .

Thanks MaxHR & dahamsta for the replies and I'll go read the links you posted now.

I don't understand the difference between ADSL and RADSL or it's bearing on linux & modems. Could you expand?

RADSL = Rate Adaptive DSL (works over poorer quality lines)

I think, and I could easily be wrong, that RADSL uses a different protocol to ADSL (PPPoA instead of PPPoE). Most ASDL modems should be compatible with both though...

Just make sure you've got an ethernet modem, not a USB one, and it should all be fine. Also, you'll save money by buying the modem from someone other than eircom...

Don't want to comment on whether ADSL uses PPPoE in Ireland, but I will say that I'm pretty sure that Red Hat supports both protocols, so it's pretty likely SuSE will too.
