Learn one of those wierd programming languages, the ones that have no practical applications and you'd be mad to use if you wanted it to be easy/fast/etc. That should cure your boredom.

Or you could try to invent your own programming language. That should take a while...

How do you go about doing that ?

How do you go about doing that ?
(Assuming you're talking about making up a language)
Not really sure. You'd have to plan it out a bit. The hardest part would be writing the compiler that would convert your source code into machine code. You'd need to know machine code (yay! fun fun fun!).

Or you could just write an interpretor. That'd be easier. I've written a Brainfúck and Turing machine interpreator in Java, wasn't too hard. It'd be easier writing a low level language interpreator, than high level. Of course if you wanted to write a language that someone would actuall use, as opposed something someone'd be interested in just for the laugh, than you'd have to have objects and loads of stuff. Just make up an interesting language.

The hardest part isn't writing the compiler. There are loads of well known algorithms* and so on for reducing code etc.

The hardest part is the actual grammar design.

*not to forget yacc and lex

how about a language used to describe porn scenes.
in years to come it could be used by struggling directors to build digital features.

actually, I like the idea of a custom language or other framework to abstract away the annoying aspects of doing somthing. sounds like a boards.ie (TM) project.

would voice XML for boards be a stupid idea ?

if your a real machoist you could try to create an avi to ascii movie generator in perl.net running on Mono

i'd say that could eat a couple of hours every evening
    :p
