RTÉ Have Truly Outdone Themselves This Time

not contempt with the RTÉ One and RTÉ N2 DOG's, RTÉ have decided it is time for some more onscreen junk. now they have given us an RTE 888 one with a solid black background and it even covers the already annoying channel name DOG. this one is different though. it is generated by the digibox and the only way to get rid of it is to bring up the search and scan banner. then it comes back after a few seconds. well done RTÉ you have truly outdone yourselves with this one. i am hoping that this is some sort of test for the early morning only when few will be watching. it better be gone by the time the rugby kicks off

    crisis averted

Ok, well the crisis is averted, but I just wanted to take the opportunity to remark how RTE consistently manages to portray itself as being pathetically incompetent. Maybe it's because they are.

The 888 symbol will probably be back though. Except this time it'll probably be accompanied by a huge "ear" symbol. This will probably be in the bottom centre of the screen. This will most likely remain there to obscure the subtitles should anyone choose to make use of them.

The whole concept of the digibox generating an '888' logo is about as mad as a sack of frogs!

The digibox generates subtitles in its own right without having to switch to teletext ffs!

    Yeah, good point there.

Has there been a new software update to make subtitles be an on/off option without having to go through several menu screens and leave the picture you're watching BTFW?

Hmm... do RTE have digital subtitles on satellite (they don't on cable) ? I don't think they did last time I checked. If the don't they may be testing them...

888 on digital does seem superfolous. Indeed I wonder why RTE hasn't gone with the times and replaced "888" by "Subtitles" like everyone else did ages ago...

But RTE are going with the times by having dogs.

Come on Subtitles would just crowded the screen 888 is small.

Do the BBC not have a big add for 888 anyway.

anyway is the dog of 888 on the other side of the screen for most progs? for 20 secs.

are you sure you didn't have the subtitles option turned on in the digibox menu? if a channel takes it's subtitles from teletext it will also display whatever is on page 888 when there are no subtitles on a programme - ISTR RTE show the icon you described. the digibox uses its own fonts so it won't look like an ordinary teletext page.

perhaps it was just a temporary fault with your box?

i thought that aswell when i saw it and checked. subtitles were off. in fact subtitles are never on. over the last 3 months i turned them on once for for about 5 minutes so that my aunt could see what they looked like and that was the old box. your comment on a fault is also valid but i certainly hope not
