Surround Sound Newbie Question

Is a surround sound setup only for playing DVDs? Is there any benifit when just watching a film from cable.
Do all in one systems come with connections for a standard co-axial cable or do you have to use the audio output from the TV?

    I'm a complete beginner...

Home cinema amps will create a virtual surround sound field for movies on ordinary cable tv which will enhance your viewing.
If you have sky plus you will be able to watch most of their movie channels in 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound.

    Yes.
Most of receivers have now days Dolby Prologic 2 whic turns 2 channel to 5.1 (using a DSP).
There are other formats as well like Logic 7 and DTS NEO.
They all do the same trick, you might like one better than the other, though.
