Yet more IrishWISP questions

I'm on the lookout for some kind of bandy at the moment but I hadn't really considered the wireless option until I took a look IrishWISPs site, on the advice of a friend.

Their pricing structure/monthly cap etc.. seems pretty good, and I'm well within the coverage area (Windy Arbour/Churchtown). At the moment my setup consists of a freebsd box with a 56k modem acting as a router and firewall (amongst other things) for 4 machines in the house, linked together with a 3com 10/100 switch. Now obviously I want to keep this setup running with whatever bb connection that I end up getting. My questions mainly regard IrishWISPs equipment, they mention a 'wireless to ethernet converter' on their site, is this some sort of bridge?, what exactly runs down from the aerial on your roof?

I'm asking because I don't want to pay the extra €100 for this convertor and find I could have improvised somthing similar with what I have already.

Also, I have been reading some horror stories in regard to irishwisp on these boards, concerning awful degredation in the service etc.. But this seems to be coming from people that aren't fully in IrishWISPs coverage area as indicated on their map; anyone within the supposed coverage area experiencing serious problems?

    Thanks.

an EC is a device with both a NIC and a Wireless NIC.

At a guess it's CAT5 cable coming down 8 wires in this cable - 4 wires for data and the other 4 wires used to power the EC.. At the bottom they cable splits to an RJ45 jack and a power supply. The RJ45 jack would go into the External NIC on your firewall - the internal going to your switch.

Well, I'm in foxrock, and I don't think I'm really on the edge of coverage, I had something like 98% signal when I was tested. The problems don't seem to be on the "frontend" of the signal, more the backhaul off 3rock. And I am still sometimes experiencing problems, but it has improved from what it was about 2 months ago (which was completely disastrous). Having said that, I'm a gamer, and the pings (latency AND jitter) are killing me (and getting me killed).

Oh, and I have the bridge.
The cable comes down and has something like a co-axial connector on the end, but smaller: it screws into the bridge. The bridge has an ethernet connector. I had a ethernet cable from the bridge to my firewall, and the firewall is hooked up to my hub, which has one or 2 machines off it and a wireless AP.

However lately I've switched to just hooking the bridge directly to my desktop, my firewall is linux and can no longer talk to the vpn server. Originally there WAS avpn server I could authenticate to, but lately only windows dialup seems to hook up correctly :(

That don't sound to good; might go with IOL or Eircom if thats the case... I don't play online games any more really, so latency isn't too much of an issue.
