Apple's Memory Prices

    Hi,

    I want to buy a new Dual-Proc. G5, with 2GB of memory.

I was checking out the Apple Store and Apple will charge me nearly EUR1200 to go from 512MB to 2GB. That sounded a little excessive to me, so I checked out http://shop4memory.com and they can sell me 2GB for a little over EUR500. (512MB DIMMS, not the 1GB DIMMS apple sell).

So if I do it myself, I can get a Mac with 2.5 GB of memory and save myself a little under EUR700.

This seems a little too easy, is there something I'm missing? (Apart from loosing 2 extra slots) Is there something special Apple are doing to the memory? The memory seems to be exactly the same spec. as on the Apple web site.

Also, I'm newish to the Apple platform. I'm an ex-Apple employee, but the last time I used Mac OS it was version 8, and the last time I used Mac OS X it was called Rhapsody. So if there is anything else I should watch out for, please let me know.

    Thanks.

make sure that shop4memory will ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE that their product will work with your machine - thay need to know the specs of your machine.

Where does the memory come from and how is it shipped? You might find yourself having to pay VAT on imports.

You could also price more RAM on OWC - who are mac specialists and very good i.m.o. - I've used them loads.

shop4memory is an Irish company, based in Kildare I think, with free delivery in Ireland, so I won't have to worry about import costs.

    Thanks for the advice.
