Problems accessing News Groups using Wireless BB and Outlook

I am based half in Brussels and half in Dublin.

In Dublin I access via dial-up, while in Brussels I access via wireless broadband.

I have seperated profiles in Outlook for each location.

In Dublin I have no problem accessing either mail or news groups.

In Brussels, mail is fine - blindingly fast, in fact! - but whenever I try to update a newsgroup I get the following error message:

502 Permission Denied - Permission Denied (Typhoon v1.2.3)

    Configuration:
    Account: news1.eircom.net
    Server: news1.eircom.net
    Protocol: NNTP
    Port: 119
    Secure(SSL): 0
    Error Number: 502
    Code: 800ccca0

Any idea what this means? Is there a work round?

Should the connection in newsgroups be changed in some way?

    Many thanks.

    D.

Eircom.net probably only allows you access if you're dialed in through their ISP. In other words, when you dial into Eircom.net you are assigned an IP address and their news server probably only allows connections from certain IP addresses; namely theirs.

    Thanks.

But, how come I have no problem with mail?

Eircom's news server is IP restricted.
See if the ISP in Brussels have a news server, if not you'll need to use a public one.

    Frank,

    Many thanks. That's that then.

Eircom told me that I shouldn't be experiencing any problems, but if I was, to use Google for news. Typical.

Most ISPs allow you to pop your mail regardless of who you're connected to.
Eircom's outgoing server uses pop authentication i.e. you authenticate yourself to it by checking mail first. That's why you can send mail while connected on the other ISP.
