Bad weather affecting DSL connection?

Over the last 24 hours or so (since late on Tuesday, 22/10/2003), my DSL connection has been dropping every couple of minutes - seems to happen especially when there's a flash of lightning!?!

    Anyone else noticed this?

Are you on a wireless service? If not I maybe it's just bad because everyone is in downloading stuff instead of being out in the cold cold rain!? Lighting shouldn't affect speed unless it hits the phone line in which case your computer is probably dead :P

I'm with Eircom - just the regular USB modem etc.... it's getting pretty damn annoying, I must say - especially as I have to wait a minute or two before it'll reconnect

Same is happening to me!!. I was thinking of posting here to see if anyone else had the same problem, pop up to brodband and lo and behold:D , someone there before me I have IOLBB. Maybe the phone lines are external(i.e on posts etc..) and are being affected by the lighting and its electrical noise, anyone else out there with this problem???.

That's exactly it. The line from your exchange to your house is still above ground for a good proportion of its length, so the static in the air, the heavy rain and even lightening hits will be affecting your phone line quality, even when you have a dsl line, it's still the same copper lines remember.

And for that reason you should probably unplug your dsl modem, it's just as susceptable to getting fried as an analog one!

Hi, using dial-up (waiting on Eircom BB install). Same thing all evening. OK now 9.50pm as storm has pretty much passed. Where are you other guys located? I'm in Swords, North Dublin.
Possibly EM impact on lines after lightning, seems worse during/after heavy rain also.
    E.

/edit/ eth0_ just answered it - brain back in gear - cheers.
