    Hi guys
I'm in 2nd year of a computer science degree and we have the option to take a year out after completing 2nd year and work for Oracle starting June 2004. I'm thinking about it because I know how important experience is in the IT industry.
I'm wondering is it worth taking the year out and has anyone else taken a year out from college to work and how did it go? Thanks

I would be off the opinion that getting a years work experience in the current climate is like striking oil, especially with someone like Oracle. People make a big deal about going back to college after being out of the loop for a year but its no big deal, you just slip back into your routine after a week or two as if you had never left.

Another point, I would be inlcined to believe that the longer you can leave it to leave college the better. Analysts are sugessting that the IT industry should become strong again in 2 or 3 years. So leaving college in 2006 with a years work experience in Oracle would be a massive advantage in the search for a career.

    Yep.

Coming out of college with a degree and a year's relevant work experience under your belt, will put you ahead of 99% of your job seeking compatriots.

In the current climate, most people spend their first year out of college in a ****ty job, getting that vital 1 years experience under their belt. By going into an internship position, you a) Are given relevant experience, suited to your current education and b) Have the chance of going back to them after college, should you impress them.

    Go for it.

By all means take any chance you get especially with a well
    known like Oracle..

Thats the type of experience that stands out on a CV..

Get in there, show some inititive and learn all you can while there.

A girl i know did that when on a similar college work experience.
She basically learned all she could, worked hard and made a big
impression. so much so, that when she graduated, they offered
    her a fulltime job.

Worth your while I would say.
