Used to play... up until minor level...had no hope of playing at senior level so quit... too unfit, fat and ugly to play at minute, but maybe someday return and play for another club.

    lol!

didn't even make minor myself! U-16 was the last grade I played!
not that I was unfit...but the inhouse bitching was terrible

im so unfit and battle scared I have had to become a goalie..but still pluggin away

I play football in goals at minor level at the moment. I've played in basically every position on the field since I started playing football. Unfitness would be the main reason why I'm playing there, I have a good kick and am decent enough in goals being the other reasons. I play at corner forward for the Junior "B" team am a sub goalie for the seniors.

played at primary and secondary up to U-16. after that not enough for a team and the local club wasn't really too receptive to the idea of 'gurls' playing..just started training with the college team and enjoying every minute

Used to play football and hurling. Always played in goals cause it involved less running and I actually enjoyed playing there!

Played Senior League Football at 16 but fell out with club when I was 18. Also while in college lost touch with home hurling club (different club to the football). Played in college too.

Now not in Ireland so it's a bit tough to find a club:rolleyes: and i'd be classed as 'slightly' unfit. Nothing a good months military training wouldn't sort out though.

Played at u16 and minor level. Then left for college etc and drinking took over !! I'm far too unfit and uncommitted to play at a competitive level again. I'm living and working in Dublin now. Does anyone know if there is a facility to play at a recreational level in Dublin, without having to commit too much time to it ???

    Thatnks for that.
There's also one in Munich! That's 'only' a 3 hour drive away!
    Must investigate!

my advice would be join a team in Division 7 or lower. it may be possible to play with them and only train once every week/two weeks.

Which area of Dublin are you living in and I can reccomend a team

I'm living in the Lucan area at the moment - is there a team in this area you would recommend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Yavvy

yeah sars have loads of teams and I think they have a juniot 4 team ( AFL 8) ..http://www.lucansarsfields.ie/ is the web site.

The season is pretty much over now but they may have something on. otherwise things kick off in march again.

Unless your U21 they are still mid season.

    Alan.

I played hurling and football up until under 21`s .
Made the county hurling tream at under 16`s and minors started working shift work so my training suffered and eventualy i faded from the gamewhich ive regreted since!
Could have made county senior level at least thats what i beleive!:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Yavvy

its never too late to get back into it and if your that good maybe you could do a littlw coaching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭puntosporting

Gonna go back playing junior and see how it goes from there at least training wont be as big and issue at that level.

I've lost all passion for the game because of the politics in the game in Longford... All I ever ask for is a bit of commitment on the field and fair play... we were ridden in a Junior semi final and I don't think I'll return to play for my club... I was speaking to a very senior player at the club on Saturday and I told him how I felt and he said that he could completely understand where I was coming from... I burst myself getting ready for this championship...

The thing is, had I won it I'd be in goals for the seniors, I wanted one medal as on outfield player and I'd be happy as a keeper but now I've been robbed of that chance and our keeper will probably retire with no known keeper between U-18, U-21 and Junior... pressure is on so the only thing I can do to stop the constant badgering thats going to happen around February is to transfer...

Based in Maynooth, looks like either there or Leixlip...

thats so often the case in local GAA. How often has stupid politics forced great players away from their local parish. Lexlip have a nice club, but if you want top football I suggust looking into dublin .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭hierro

well, it's not top football I'm looking for, I'm only average and I can't get my fitness up to senior standard, I can only really commit myself to play junior ball for little other than the fun of it... If I was to play in Dublin, I would be looking at perhaps playing Division 4 or 5... Lucan would be handy as you've suggested to an earlier poster so I might give that a go... better be traveling 10 miles than 70 twice a week...

I agree with the politics forcing players and fans out of the game but as for your top football in Dublin comment, that's rubbish.

Other counties have very decent club set-ups. If Dublin club football was so good they'd be flying through the Leinster and winning the club championship every year. They don't.

The only difference between Dublin and the rest of the country (or most of it at least) is that parish clubs don't exist as such. Dublin has huge clubs that are far too big and do not aid in the promotion of the game in Dublin.

As for other counties I don't think there's one county that has had one club winning the championship every year. There have been good teams from clubs that have led to lots of championships but there's always been decent competition within the county.

And parish club politics is nothing compared to the politics in some (read most) Dublin clubs.

Dublin club football is of an excellent standard and IMO much higher than Kildare. I agree you imposter about a lot of that you said about counties like Wicklow, Meath, Laois and Offaly but not in kildare. My cousin playes in Kildare and I playued a few friendlies with them and I found the standard to be lower than Dublin.

yeah i have played at all levels and usually been confined to the back lines at some position as my shooting ability is not the best.
have also had a spell in goals which was successful, but that was just filling in while regular keeper was out.play full back for u21 team and centre back for junior team, usually corner or half back whenevr i get playinng in intermediate, which is my teams 1st team.although i have played full forward this season twice in an injury/suspension crisis,2 games 2goals and a point...happy days!!also can crack the odd sweet point from a 45 and also try my hand at handball.....and still im an unfit fecker!!!

I'd like to start playing Hurling again,

I played up until 16 with my home club, Newtownshandrum, I wasn't too great but I'd love to give it another go.

I'm living up in Dublin for the past few years and would like to play up here, any recommendations on outsider friendly clubs for North Dublin.(Swords/Santry/Whitehall/Phibs/Glasnevin/Cabra/Stoneybatter & environs)

Finished off my under 21 hurling career this season, mine give the intervarcity(sp?) a go, don't have time to play for my club with college and the like. Training from late febuary on... not right now thank you very much.

Have played hurling all my life, played as a dual player until minor, 'cause its what you do' in our club.

Went from Minor straight onto the Senior panel in the club, was playing U21, Senior (friendlies etc), Intermediate and Junior all at one stage.
On one day played Senior cup game in AM, straight back across city for inter league game and stayed on the pitch to play Junior league. Then picked up shoulder injury, had 5 dislocations in 2 years, had to have operation last June and now hope to get back playing ASAP this season. Id even go playing U15 if I was alowed to get skills back again.

All depends on the auld shoulder though, 6 months of physio done 6 more atleast to do

you didn't happen to get money for that shoulder injury?

guy I know in college got €€€ for a broken finger sustained in his LC year.

Played ( well a sub after all the training) in every grade bar senior, more positions than the Karma Sutra!. In my last game in a junior match, I scored a wonderful point from out on the wing, great send off. College kept me away from then and I suipported both club and county regularly until the last few year's when the travelling became too much. Great times though.

Played county at U16 and Minor, played all levels at club but was forced out of GAA due to "parish rule" in Mayo. Have not played in 6 years

Thats crap. It isn't really a problem in Cavan to be honest. There are a number of players from my team that are from Monaghan and play here because we are so close to Monaghan (so thats what the smell is ;) )

I play hurling for club and County Monaghan, Love the sport

Played U-14 club 'Latton' U-14 won all-ireland 'C' Feile na gael
Played U-16 for county monaghan 2002 won all-ireland 'C' group

Just back trainin this year for county hoping to do all-ireland again 'C'.

Ive been playing with county since 14 and since 15 up to U-21 level and club I play senior level.

I love the sport and without it would be lost. Aint a big fan of the football though.

used to play minor then made jump to u-21 last summer but club was going to bits, no players week in week out and training was usually 4 teams training on the same night but had a total of about 30 players altogether(i trained very week regardless) who used to train. when i started to get dropped for people who turned up once in a blue moon i left!! now the club is in real trouble with players, finances and inside politics and organisation!!

went and played soccer then and the differance in the way things are done is unbelieveable. better organisation, better training(turnout and workout) and if you don't trian you don't play. oculd never see myself going back to GAA again not worth bustin my balls for!!!

yup very hard to get backinto it but I dont think the game has changed too much at the lower levels. tatics may have changed a little but its still ball... Honestly I think the key to being a decent mid level team is sharp passing, tracking your player and the ability to take most of your scoring chances.

Do the simple things and all that eh ?

Tis funny really, I've never player or even been all that interested in playing. I've moved to England a few months ago and now I'm after joining a team and am getting involved in pre-season training:D
