I have ordered broadband from UTV and i want to get a wireless network so i can use it my 4 computers and laptop .
I would prefer 11g wireless so I am a bit confused as to what hardware I need. I was looking at this but it says its pppoa and I am told UTV is pppoe , am i right in thinking it will not work.

I want to have access to the broadband with 3 pcs currently on a 100mb hub , 1 mac cube using its airport card, and 1 laptop which is not on the network at the moment. Is anyone running a system similar to the one I want and if so what equipment are you using.

    Thanks

Sorry bruce, doesn't look as if that'll play ball ... PPPoA and PPPoE are entirely different beasties.

Get the dlink 604+ - I sell them for 180 ex VAT.

    They are 22mbps/PPPoE/A the works.

    4 port 10/100 Switch.

ADSL Modem built in, which some of them don't have.

theres an asus wireless G router on komplett for around the 150 mark I think. Has a pppoe client built in so no fuss with modems. Has DHCP, NAT and all that built in along with a 4 port 10/100 switch, print server and a usb port for your webcam/hard drive/printer. It's luvly :D

the belkin website says that the f5d7630 does support PPPoE as well as PPPoA ... dunno if this link will work but if you go to belkin.co.uk, click on wireless and then click on upcoming products it'll be listed

As I understand from reading articles on it you simply put the details UTV provide into the pppoe setup in the router config and it does the rest. So I suppose it is in fact a DSL modem too.

Try googling it for more info though. Theres bound to be fairly concise reviews & technical docs on it around the place.

routers have build in modems and as someone says above you enter the details provided by utv (or whoever) and hopefully it connects fine! you enter the details via your web browser usually by using the address 192.168.0.1

bruce - before you part with your dosh - the Asus router does NOT have a built in modem, at least not according to the Asus website. The specs include a WAN Ethernet port (10/100 BaseT) into which a DSL Ethernet modem would connect. The USB port is for sharing internal resources (USB drive, webcam etc) with your network and the internet, not for connecting a USB modem. Here's a link to the User Manual if you want to verify any of this.

Having said all that, it looks like a nice piece of kit. If you still want it, get on to UTV and tell them you don't need their modem - they'll refund you €30 - and buy a decent ethernet modem instead.

If anyone's interested, the included PPPOE client only does the authentication part of what a DSL modem typically does - the modem is still required to handle the actual connection (VPI/VCI settings etc).

As UTV are giving out the modem free you wont get 'cash back' this has been mentioned in recent posts in the UTV support group

    routers have build in modems

    Em...., no.

They CAN have built in modems - but a router simply acts as
a single point of access to the net for all your machines. It takes the IP address given to it via the "modem" (either external or built-in) from the ISP and accepts requests for internet data from the private IP's it doles out to your machines.

Apologies for misinformation re modem refund - this was in place when I signed up in the summer.

rymus - does your brief comment mean that you disagree or that you're disappointed?

It doesn,t have a phone socket (rj11??) so I didn,t think it was a modem so i didnt buy it.

I did buy the 3 com office connect 11g access point with a pcmcia card for €150 delivered from Komplett and I am in the process of buying the dlink 504 from base wireless at €126 as I could not find 1 unit to do everything.

Thanks to all for your help and advice.

flamegrill -- do you know does the 604+ work with netsource. I'm getting conflicting info from all over the place.

brucealmighty -- the d-link 604+ mentioned by flamegrill has everything in the one box, incl modem. ie it's essentially a 504 with a built-in wireless AP.
