Could we somehonw put together a quciklist of services in 2k that the average power user doesn't need running
    ie. Messenger etc.?
Or even an up-to-date synopsis of what each does?

    http://www.xp-antispy.org/ Free Utility.

will turn off the ones you REALLY don't need. List the balance in here then . Get a command line proggie from the MS site called tlist.exe and pipe the output to a tlist.txt file as in

    tlist > tlist.txt

    pashte that.

    Don't forget ww.sysinternals.com - pstools
    pslist & pskill & autoruns

another way to list (running) services
    Net Start > Net-stop.bat

To stop them Notepad replace 4 spaces with NET STOP " and add another " at the end of the line.
then simply use REM (or a :) at the start of a line for services you don't want stopped.

Always stop a service - before you disable it - just in case it was really needed...

If you have ZoneAlarm - it should detect any thing trying to tunnel out..

    it's all you need man,

it breaks up what you need to have running and what you don't need running into groups like
    SAFE,
    Internet Gateway,
    Gaming,
    Super Tweak.

i done this to the gaming configuration and got the ram that's used on startup down to 70mb from 200mb

This site Here gives you granular info on each process (300 are detailed) and on tweaking it which will also help decide if you need them running at all.

Disable the spooler service if you have no printer on the network, that can be a right hog at times in my experience.

you can disable these unless you need them

    messenger
    telnet
    smartcard
    smartcard helper
    QOS
    TCP\IP Netbios helper
    UPS
    Runas
    remote registry
    task scheuduler
    fax service
    background intelligent transfer

thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

ill have a deep look tomorrow.

throw "windows 2000 tweaks" into google and see what it throws up

I in a moment of hangover induced madness set all my servies to manual :) Only two services failed to start themselves and that was soon taken care of now I have the 2k install running with minimal unecessary services. *something will go wrong soon ;)*

Yeah, I've those disabled Soupercomputer, and a few others.
Modifying the security Polices etc. is also interesting :)
Disabled remote shutdown etc. all sorts of handy holes closed.

Agnantium Firewall is also rather handy for the paranoia inclined :)
