    Hi,

Just got IBB installed & everything seems fine except for the fact that when i try to send an e-mail from outlook express using my xxxxxx@iolfree.ie address it keeps getting bounced back to me with the following error message -

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxxx@yahoo.co.uk'. Subject 'test', Account: 'xxxxx', Server: 'mail.iolfree.ie', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relay not permitted', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

Ive done a search on this '550 relay not permitted' error but anything ive turned up makes no sense to my simple mind.

Anyone know what the problem is here? The settings are the same as when i was using dial-up. I do have a bb conn through a h/w router if that would make any difference.

    Thanks.

It just a relay restriction to stop IOL's mailservers to be used to spam.
If IBB have an smtp server, use that.

Yep. Or if you have IIS w/SMTP you can use your own machine as your outgoing server.

Very handy, lets me send emails from any account, to any account. But I'm an honourable guy who'd never spoof headers :)

i went one better and got a copy of mdaemon (www.mdaemon.com), set up my server as a mail server and now have my own domain with unlimited mail, pop3, imap, webmail, etc and it cost me what ever for the domain and what ever for mdaemon. theres a few mail servers out there that are free too, if your interested. mail enable is free and handy. theres 2 versions. the free one and one for $175 per server. not sure the difference. used the free one for a while. handy. also, for those of you who dont want to leave your machines on all the time, zone edit (www.zoneedit.com) do mail backup quite cheap. my mail server @ home is my workstation, but plan to move to a dedicated mail server on my network soon. running on cable BTW. hmmm. sorry for the waffell. also, these can be used to stop spam! handy that.

Thanks for all the help guys :)

Yeah, what i think i may do is make use of an old P2 thats around here & use it as a local server. The idea being that ill put linux w/apache or sthg on it & also try & put a mailserver on there too.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly accepted. The simpler the better ;)

http://www.e-smith.org and http://www.clarkconnect.com/ are two full linux distros which are designed for that kind of thing. i used both, and both where cool, but upgraded to redhat 9. if you go for redhat, you could try this article (http://blog.lotas-smartman.net/archives/000951.php). its got info on building an advanced mail server. handy too.

That's the problem. Ever since spammers began to pollute the 'net, SMTP servers have been configured so that they will only accept mail that is addressed to "foreign" addresses if the mail comes from an "inside connection". So you have to be dialled in to IOL if you want to use IOLs SMTP server to send mail to a non-IOL e-mail address. If you're connected to IBB, you need to send your e-mail out through smtp.irishbroadband.ie. You can still leave your e-mail address as something@iolfree.ie if you want.

Anyone connected to IBB can send mail to any address using the IBB SMTP server. But if you're "outside" the IBB network, and try to send mail through the IBB mail server, it will reject anything that isn't addressed to an IBB address. Just about every well configured ISP in the world works this way (though eircom used to, and still might, allow anyone connected to INEX to use their SMTP servers for sending mail, as far as I know).
