It will go up to a generous 6Gb in January next year when the next pricing announcement is due.

Know this is pretty off-topic but is it possible that Eircom will remove their cap in the next year or so?

That seems pretty unlikely. I was told that during the initial trials of ADSL here there was no cap in place (or planned for the full product). Due to apparently insane amounts of bandwidth usage it was decided to put in place a cap to stop what they saw as abuse of the service.

This is all secondhand info by the way so it may well be wrong. Thats what I was told though. Any company removing the cap at the moment with the numbers of BB customers rising would only end up with the same problem as Netsource I would imagine.. Still if they increased it that would be good. Although theres every potential that the cap could be raised as high as you like but due to poor bandwidth rates you will never be able to reach the cap in any case.

If all everyone on RADSL is getting is 5k/sec then you could have a 100Gb for all the difference it actually makes!

And how much would you have to download to be considered abusing the service? In other words, at what point will Eircom take action. Surely no-one yet has been billed for going over the download allowance.

I think abuse was classified as 5% of the users taking 95% of the bandwidth available.

They didn't expect it seems and therefore they introduced a blanket cap which they thought was adequate for the largeest group of "normal" users and which only penalised the heavy downloaders. Makes you think twice about that 100mb mpeg trailer when its going to cost you €3 to download it I suppose.

Work out how much it's possible to download in a month assuming you can do line speed 24x7. Then divide this by the contention ratio. That's 'fair' use of the service. Most of the caps these days seem to be double that value or more.

The maximum speed you can download at. 512Kbits/second for most.

    512Kbits/s.

    512K*60Secs*60Minutes*24hours*30Days/48Users.

That's 27648000Kbits. About 3GBytes per person per month (allowing for TCP/IP overhead).
