It really depends on what you're comparing. Some comics are crap altogether, but some cartoons such as the original Batman are utter classics! Well drawn and well written - and the voices are superb.

Gotta be comics, with cartoons they have to be made for children and all the violence has to be toned down, have you ever seen someone die in a cartoon ment for kids. One of the few exeptions was Spawn but that was ment for adults.

Oh right, i thought it was a general poll between the two medias

Actually I don't see why you can't interpret it as just being a comparison between general comics and general cartoons.

I know there are loads of cartoons which were around for years before a comic came out about it, and same way around. And there's no reason why cartoons can't be held in their own accord. I mean after all they are artwork with a story line - just animated.

Simpsons are great btw. The most intelligent cartoon i've ever seen.

    OK then we'll conform :P

Direct comic/cartoon interpretations, the cartoon is always better eg. X-men adventures = the exact comic for the x-men tv show. The cartoon is better. But if the cartoon is only based on the idea of a comic such as spiderman, then the comic is always better.

I think cartoons are more entertaining but less intelligent... the batman of the future really is lazy .. not evolving the caracters ... but keeps your attention because so much happens in each episode... there may not be reasons for the events! .. but they happen.... then in contrast ... there is a graphic novel of Batman ... where he is a vampire.. "Crimson Mist" I think its called... but there are less scenes.. but the reason behind each scene.. or event.. is explained in detail...

what I mean in short is... if Batman in a cartoon was a vampire.. he would be shown killing people... getting over the remorse... recovering .. and would be ok for next weeks episode...

if he was a vampire in a comic .. you would know how he became a vampire... the darkness of why he may want to say this way... all his thoughts on each killing ... just everything in more detail...

yeah.. thats what I mean... comics are more detailed!:D

cartoons are geared for those with a lesser attention span...

I think cartoons are better...The Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy been the best.

Well in fairness I don't think cartoons can be done anymore in the way comics are. They can't be done in sagas or in a long running story line, because on most channels that they're shown on, you get random episodes each day - not necessarily in order.

Have you ever watched CNX? I tried to watch the Dragonball Z series but it just kept jumping all over the place and repeating episodes. The only way I got to find out exactly what happened in the end, was to watch the 1 day marathon they showed which had 9 hours of episodes back to back.

If you did that with standard cartoons which are aimed at showing on terrestrial channels, the plot would be completely lost. Even look at the spiderman series - they had a theme going each series which when watched on TV was never in order so it never seemed to make sense. Imagine collecting a series in random order and never finding the issues in between.

It's really the exact same argument as books vs movies really. I think the most of us like both.

<Comic book guy> Worst analogy ever

    :P

No you're right about book/movie relations. However the only thing is that in a movie you see the entirity there and then (unless you walk out if it's crap). So i'm just saying that movies are as different from cartoons as they are from TV programs such as soap operas. And the main difference between cartoons and ongoing TV programs are that they don't get repeated or aired in random order - so they're easier to follow.

Well i think anime cartoons can be masterpieces, they can far surpass comics in almost every way. I've just watched a couple of episodes of 'Evangelion' that i borrowed off a mate, now whilst its very confusing and extremely weird. There is no mistaking that this is a piece of art, it's very dark and quite disturbing at points.

Of course my love of comics has always been artwork first, storylines second so i dunno.

both are excellent ... I think which ever you prefare will depend on how long your attention span is at the time.

Iceman you obviously have a long attention span and pay attention to detail.
