Line Test on Split Line

Had a look through the forum and can't get a definitive answer on this:

If you have two phone lines in your house split off the one line, is it impossible to get the line to pass the adsl test unless you get a full second line?

Years ago, I used to have really slow net access and rang the engineer and asked if the phone was split, he said it was but there was no capacity for another line. But he did switch the split lines around so the the internet line got the main connection. Then the internet became alot faster. So do people have experiences where they can pass on a split line if they are on the main connection of the line?

I was told a the start of the summer my line had passed but since my exchange was enabled in june, i fail!

Btw, the eircom prequal tool now no longer requires your eircom account #, so you can easily check all your neighbours lines and see if you're the only one with a problem...

I have two line going in to my house which were split. I was always failing the adsl test. I had the lines unsplit, this must have been done at the exchange at some point as my line past last June and I've been up and running since then yeay :)

So to answer your question, with my experience, I could not get dsl unless my lines were unsplit.

    Hi There

Your line will of been split by way of a DAC box, this allows your existing telephone line to be split into two. You have two numbers on one line, but the downside is your only get half the capacity on either line.

This means that the fastest modem connection you can get on this is 28800bps.

DSL Broadband can't be installed on a line that has one of this splitters (DAC box) on the line.

Yes I'm pretty sure I have one of those DAC boxes and so won't be able to get adsl. Will split lines eventually be able to get adsl or is it a problem that cannot be fixed without getting a separate line?

The funny thing is that on the new line my download speeds are 3k/sec but on the old line I get 5k/sec which seems to say that the lines aren't evenly split and that the old line has almost full capacity?

If you have a DAC you can call Eircom to have it removed, you will have to give up one of your numbers though!

Then assuming you've passed the line quality test the number you decide to keep - your on your way to having DSL Broadband.

Incidently if anyone wants to learn more about DSL Broadband take a look at A Beginners Guide to Broadband at http://www.dslfiltersdirect.com/ebook.htm
