It's also being reported by the Sunday Tribune who say that the bulletin will be available throughout the night to Sky digital viewers in Ireland and the UK.

A good use of Sky News interactive I think.

Sky to begin Irish news service
    05/10/2003 - 9:46:51 am

Broadcaster Sky News is to launch a new Irish service in 2004, it said today.

The company will broadcast a half-hour evening bulletin from new studio facilities in Dublin and London, with two Irish presenters.

The 30-minute slot at 9pm every weekday evening will feature Irish news, weather and sport.

A review of the week’s major events will also be produced on Saturday and Sunday.

Sky’s Dublin correspondent will present news from a purpose-built studio in Sky Ireland’s new offices, five minutes from the Dáil.
Another presenter will be based in the firm’s London studios.

The team will be backed up by Sky News’ Belfast journalists, who will produce daily stories from across Northern Ireland.

Nick Pollard, head of Sky News, said: “Since it began broadcasting in 1989, Sky News has always played an important role with Irish viewers.

“The launch of the service is a natural progression which we hope will enhance this relationship and increase Sky News’ relevance to the viewer.”

In Ireland Sky News is currently available to more than 870,000 households via cable and Sky digital.

It's about time that Sky News decided to air some Irish current affairs. I for one am glad that they have finally decided to make an effort!

In fairness, they've been pretty good covering the elections here in greater depth that the main UK stations. Of course back in the early days they gave much greater coverage of Irish news since satellite penetration in the UK was still very low and most of their viewers were in Dublin (via Cablelink as it was then called).

Great news as long as Sky do invest in having a proper Dublin setup/studio, and as long as the Sky News team fight against Murdoch's wish that may become more like a 'Fox Europe'. Great news also as RTE will have to at the very least launch an Irish news/current affairs offering on sat (or is that just wishful thinking?)
