Freddy VS Jason

It's been supposedly happening for years, but finally Freddy Vs. Jason hits the theaters.

With the combination of two of the biggest horror franchises in the world, you had either an utter disaster on your hands, or the best things to happen to horror cinema in ages. Thankfully, it's the latter, and with a very fresh script it avoids the pitfall of simply lumping the two characters together and crossing fingers.

With many proposed directors in all the post-production hell, the job finally landed in the hands of Ronny (Bride Of Chucky) Yu, and he pulls off the mesh of characters perfectly. He really seems to have a great feel for what each of our horror heroes are all about, and seeing as the studio opted for someone who supposedly hadn't even seen the originals, they made a wise choice in Yu.

First thing that will strike you is Freddy himself... He's the most downright sadistic he's ever been! All the crap one-liners and quips that have plagued the Nightmares since the early sequals have pretty much been utterly canned, thank god. Where before we've had a Freddy that seems like he's been coined out on some rather poor fan-scripts, we now have what seems the "Real" Freddy, especially in the opening scene where we get to see Robert Englund without make-up as the 'Alive and well' Freddy Krueger being just downright creepy, as you see him lick a picture of a young child to stick in his scrap book.

To be quite honest, Freddy kicks ass!
And its been a very, very long time since I've really thought of him other than a has-been comic-slasher.

Jason on the other hand, is simply Jason.
Well, not really "Simply", there are a few twists that get thrown in, and more than one utterly brilliant scene with Kelly Rowland. But stuntman Ken Kirzinger really pulls off Jason brilliantly. I'd argue that the only flaw was with the make-up; the head just looks black and rubbery. But he does look very nasty, the whisps of hair look great, and he looks truly massive and imposing.

Obviously Kane Hodder is that favorite in the role, and chances are we'll see him back, but Ken certainly gives him a run for his money.

The 'fodder' of the film, or as some might call them, the supporting cast, are great. Some of them you just cant wait for them to die, which is perfect! Others you can kinda empathize with at times, which is staggering for a Freddy or Jason film, where all you want to do is see everyone get cut to ribbons. There's barely anyone left alive by the end of the film however, and that's obviously no secret, but that doesn't really matter, the deaths in the film are just fantastic, and really over the top.

Frankly, it's like watching a really great boxing match in parts, which in relation to the horror film genre is far more refreshing than simply waiting for your favorite horror 'Hero' to do his stuff, you're really rooting for someone to make the bigger bits. But the great thing about the film is that it lets neither the Friday series, nor the Nightmare series down, both Freddy and Jason pack some serious whallop, and certainly hold no punches.

I certainly wont tell you any more, though. It's really worth seeing, and is possibly better than most of the films on either side of the franchise, and both our hero's are possibly at their utterly sadistic, and brutal best. There is also a bit of humour in the film, thankfully not like the humour that bogged down the Nightmares so much, but its witty enough and rather fresh. You'll know what I mean when you see the young stoner kid's Alice In Wonderland scene. :D

All in all, it's just a great film.
    Go see ASAP!

Can't wait for the DVD, here's hoping they include a little beat-em-up type game on it, like Guest House Paradiso did. :D

There's an interview on AICN with bruce. He says some low down execs are very keen on the idea, but there's nothing definite yet.

Class if it comes about though! There's also rumours of Evil Dead4, but sure there always has been......

what pissed me off about freddy vs jason was the stoner is it, a total rip off of Jay of Jay and Silent Bob. sure i could go on all day slagging films, the film though was great, traditional nudity at the start, a must have in any good slasher film(and any film).

There was a review in the Galway Advertiser where the stupid Biatch mentioned she was pleased to see the stoner from Jay and Silent Bob doing a clever cameo. She was serious.

    I read that.
That was the worst review I've ever read in my life.
She even went on to say that both Freddy and Jason are creations of Wes Craven.
And the amount of glaring error reguarding the plot! FFS!
It's not like there was much plot in the first place!
    How could anyone not catch-on!?
