    might be old news ..
Small Claims Court to go on-line

Sorting out problems with unsatisfactory goods or services is set to become easier as the Courts Service works towards piloting an on-line Small Claims Court application. A pilot scheme in the Dublin Small Claims Court is due to begin in the first quarter of 2004.

Small claims can be lodged by people who feel they have received faulty or deficient goods or services, when claimants feel they have not had proper redress from the retailer or service provider. Claims may also be lodged in respect of minor damage to property and non-return of a rent deposit.

The pilot scheme will enable users to file their claims on-line and to pay the EUR9 fee for registering a claim on-line as well. The advent of the on-line scheme could mean that if a claim is settled out of court -- and currently 50 percent are -- an applicant might not ever have to attend the court office or the courtroom in person. The project is part of the Courts Service's five-year strategy to create eCourts, an electronic interface between citizens and the courts.
