I guess you weren't able to get UTV or IOL because you would save nearly €10 a month?

i dont use the phone so i dont mind about the 10euro extra and if u get self install at the moment u get free modem, free conection and 1 month free

Sigh, UTV and IOL also offer free modem, free install and free first month.

And their CAP is double that of Eircoms at 8GB (as compared to 4GB with Eircom).

And UTV charge over half of what Eircom charge if you go over the CAP.

And they are between e5 - e10 per month cheaper.

I really can't understand why people don't shop around.

Please see the bottom of the IOFFL ISP DSL price guide page for a table with a clear comparison of all the products available.

No wonder our country is going down the pan with the old "I don't mind paying it" attitude, it's people like you that make prices so unaffordable in this country.

Oh, YAY! Let's all go around chanting "Nolan" to honour €ircon's evil malevolent dictator before we all get €ircon's Engineer Install package.

By the way, I was being sarcastic.

I hate the way people automatically think €ircon are the best, when IOL and UTV clearly kick €ircon's @$$!

I ordered Eircom coz the pings are lower than IOL & UTV as per info on this board.

The 4 GB cap is a bitch but as a gamer, pings are critical.

What do ye guys think of the chances of Eircom raising the cap in the near future (or lowering the price)

    Griff

    eircom raising cap - 2010
    eircom lowering prices? - never

The guy just asked for some tips on self install - not a load of smart arse, snide comments.

"No wonder our country is going down the pan with the old "I don't mind paying it" attitude, it's people like you that make prices so unaffordable in this country."

Davey - he is entitled to order what he wants, and pay what he feels is a fair price. There are merits to shopping around, but if he decides that eircom is the best for him, then thats his business. You sound like Mary Harney !

To answer the original question...The self install is very straight forward - just install the splitters/filters on the line, install the modem and it's drivers. Once you have your username & password and your line has been activated - log in and off you go. I'm sure you'll be quite happy with eircom.

    Regards,

    Wheeler_1028.

:D You will be surprised, once you start to get used to DSL and how much better then 56k it is and the possibilities of it, you will more then likely go over 4GB.

Anyway you are still paying e7 more a month then you need to.

IOL, Netsource and UTV should be available everywhere that Eircom is available. They're just reselling eircom's DSL.

Nope, UTV, IOL and Netsource all resell Eircoms wholesale RADSL Bitstream product. That means you can get RADSL from UTV, IOL and Netsource everywhere you can get Eircom RADSL including Cork.

Netsource all resell Eircoms wholesale ADSL products (business DSL), so they are also avialble for ADSL at all thesame exchanges as Eircom.

Also Esat have some exchanges in cork enabled for LLU (their business products).

Don't IOL have a USB modem? Try sharing that on a router...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 777 ✭✭✭MarVeL

Mmm so do Eircom, IOL and netsource. AFAIK noone is providing an ethernet router free (yet). USB can be shared directly over a router if you get the right router but at this stage the additional cost to get a router with DSL modem is very small.

According to the Eircom website, they are supplying the netopia cayman smart modem, which apparently has ethernet and USB ports.

Purely as a matter of interest, where did you get the idea that you could only get netsource and IOLBB in Dublin? Certainly not from reading this board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 777 ✭✭✭MarVeL

thanks for that Ripwave. Must have missed that one.

eircom do an ethernet one... for free...

Have eircom started charging yet if you go over your cap?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭jank

id go for utv if they did the ethernet modem!!

but if they dont well thats that!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,573 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

eircom are providing a netopia cayman 3341 modem it has ethernet and usb ports (i've used oine recently and still waiting for my line to pass - luckily i live up the country and know the engineers so i may have a chance of getting the line fixed)
all you have to do is put in the usename and password and off it goes.
you can also upgrade it to a full firewall for $39.95 from netopias website (which i would recommend anyone to do) the box actually looks like a great piece of kit.

Hi, we just got the eircom dsl today in the post (modem etc) but we can't connect. Ringing them they said that it will actually be connected from their end about 2 weeks after you ordered..now we ordered on about the 22nd of sept, then they said that all post/internet orders we all just received yesterday due to some error, so looks like we have to wait an extra 2 weeks...

anyone got this same problem? anyway around it? maybe could phone the technical help line and get them to turn it on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 341 ✭✭PAPILLION

I'm getting ADSL, got line checked and got given the thumbs up, eircom want my business but i told them to ring me back later this week, i want to shop around.

Which provider is most stable? has the best gaming performance with regards to pings and lagging in gaming. plus, with eircom, you are locked into a 12 month contract with a 150 yoyo penalty if you have to leave it, I'm renting so am concerned about this.

Nope, eircomnet look after ip stuff and radius (authentication and session logging), but they don't have access to eircom retails systems (ie the part of the company that looks after the telephone network-which is the part that sets up the adsl sevice on your line)

    Oh but they do!!

As I discovered to my horror recently, the eircom istream help line is now a 1550 number:eek:
And when I had a problem with my normal phone line I rang the 1901 number as I've often done before and they told me that they couldn't report a fault for me any more because I now have a DSL line!!

So now I and anyone else on i stream starter has to pay for a 1550 call to report any kind of a fault:eek:
And you can be guaranteed that you will be put on hold while something or other is checked...
    What a rip off:mad:

How do other ISP users eg netsource, IOL UTV etc report faults on their line or is this rip off restricted to Eircom i stream customers??

    mm

p.s I am happy with the service other than that except for two breakdowns since i got it in May :)

Get the persons name, and ask to speak to their supervisor. You're paying €25/odd a month line rental, and of you can't get voice calls, then you're entitled to exactly the same level of support as anyone else. If 1901 has a problem with that, then they better sort it out internally.

(In other countries, eircom would find itself in court if it pulled that sort of stunt, but we do things differently over here!)
