Should Irish cities have a system of public toilets as many cities on the continent do?

known the government they'd say if would cost €200,000 to implement and build but when it comes about it cost them €2,000,000,000,000,000.50

Anyone ever go into the ones on O'Connell St (they're probably not there anymore). Scary experience

Looking into the public toilet system you would need to take a few things into consideration , firstly look over at london they have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on all this flash toilets that pop outa the ground at nite and whats happeneed to them People either piss on the street or vandalise them

Look also at the situation in ireland people have you ever gone into a public toilet that had not been desecrated I mean its a total waste of time every single public toilet which ive been to is ****ing recked plain and simple . and people aint going to spend the time to look for a toilet if they ahve to piss they will simple unzip or in the alternative sex department pull down and let it go

*** their a ****ing waste of time

Whuh?! Toilets that pop out of the ground?! How do they that?! That sounds neat! I've a mental image now of a hole in the ground opening and a toilet building revoving outwards, like in some spy movie!

yea like at the end of one of the gremlins films, the rich guy has a secret passage from his office, it comes up outta the ground in some kinda toilet/ phone box lookin thing. or am i just gone mad?

The sex booth is a great idea, I had always reckoned that there should be rooms in dublin airport which could be rented by the hour. But to be able to have an oul' knee trembler on the way home from the pub (without being nicked for it) would be fantastic!

btw: the Irish version of the pop up toilets would be just a hole in the ground, at a cost to the taxpayer as quoted by woosaysdan.

    Don't see why not.

What we need is either the Belgian / German example of a concierged (permanently staffed) public toilet - you pay maybe 20c to use it and there is someone to keep them clean and secure.

That or make it a condition of pub licences that anyone can use the toilets.

Singapore airport have rooms like this. They cost the equivalent of €30 for 5hrs. Use them for what you will!!

The toilets in London are crazy. This small wall of urinals pop out of the ground. They had to try and do something over there cos all the ammonia in piss is slowly dissolving the limestone paths and stuff.

Yes and they would put them in all the wrong places. If the trams were not all ready built the Luas could of had hop-on-hop-off toilets.

Im fairly sure theres one of those continental style cubicles outside the Heineken building beside the Liffey. Never used it,I assume it charges money.
Belfast-most public toilets in the city centre charge for access now. This is sh1te but they claim its for maintenance, and as well as that it probably keeps the junkies out of them.

Anyway your never far from a burger king or mc donalds in a city centre so you can go there if needs be.And at least theyre usually clean, which is more than can be said for some council run bogs.

The council do not have to run publics toilet. A private firm can do it. My question is why are there almost no toilets in Irish cities apart for ones in fast food joints and pubs. What are people to do when these are shut? There are complaints in Temple bar about using the streets as toilets as at that time of night when the fast food place and pubs are shut there is nowhere else to go.

I've a mate whose father is a head town engineer. A few years ago (by my request) he found out that those "continental style cubicles" (thanks @ Tha Gopher) cost about 50 grand up front and about 15 grand a year to service (rough prices in pounds). not too expensive then. There's even one in Skibbereen - a lot bigger than the two in Limerick too (you can even dance in it if you're so inclined).

I've got to say I much rather a proper public cubicle that cleans itself rater than a pub loo (er, except when I'm in the pub of course). Every town should have at least one.

I think something has to be done as more and more folk are pissing in the street.

The ones outside the q bar, the little pay things never work and even when they are usually have some junkie high and fallen asleep, actually saw one, one day with the door open.

Really don't see an answer, as any public toilet has and will be used in this way.
    Shame really.

The state could provide safe areas for drug addicts to shootup or the Gardaí could enforce the law (not much chance of the Gardaí enforcing the law) or the law could be changed to allow pissing and pucking on the streets, which is what is happening now anyway.
