Will my eircom ISDN line complicate getting IOL broadband

    I want to get IOL broadband but the IOL faq says if you have an ISDN line an engineer will have to come out...

    Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Should I just have the ISDN line removed first?

    I looked into this recently as I'm in the same boat. You can get your line downgraded to PSTN for €20-25 (presumably €20 + VAT) but the problem is that you'll be stuck with it until you get the BB installed, and if there's a problem on your line you'll be stuck with it until you can get ISDN back in.

    As far as I'm aware, if you go through the ISP with it, they'll downgrade you the day they come to install, and put you back on ISDN if there's a problem the same day. That being said, this is all pretty much speculation, I'd love to hear from anyone that can confirm, deny or clarify this.

    The line's already been given the ok by eircom.

    Incidentally, it failed two tests until I told them I had ISDN, at which point they did some more extensive test that took a few hours and found it passed....

    I dunno, I guess I'll ask the esat people what they think...

    I know this sounds a bit insane bur really, from what I have heard the best thing to do is get a brand spanking new PSTN line in, get IOLBB's or whoever's ADSL in on that and only then cancel your ISDN.

    If you go with IOL, eircom will in all likely-hood try and make things difficult for you so tell them only what they absolutely need to know.

    And I have heard horror stories of being stuck with PSTN for as much as 2 weeks with both eircom and IOL when trying to get ADSL on what is now your ISDN line.

    Well to keep things simple I said feck it and went with eircom....

    Only to be met with a nice surprise of all things. They said that since they had to send an engineer to downgrade the ISDN line, I'd have to pay an install fee (165 euro) but for some reason my broadband monthly fee will be only 35 euro for the first year, which is nice.

    This in addition to the fact that the esat modem is usb only (no ethernet) made eircom the right choice for once, possibly.

    Fingers crossed it all works out.

    There's a possibility that the new PSTN line will be provisioned on a carrier, however, which isn't going to help one bit.
