A friend recently asked me to connect my Modem-router to his Eircom BB connected line, checking to see if his mac recogisned the router, it did. The thing is it worked with my IOL settings, Username-Password I never thought to check IP address, but were we connect to Eircom or IOL, is your BB connection based on phoneline or Username?

Username. You were connected to IOL by the same route you use at home. There's no link between phone number and DSL service. That's part of the reason why they need the PPP layer to introduce authentication.

Eh... Maybe I'm wrong but if you read up on IOL's FAQ it says it IS dependant on phone number. It uses a thing called CLI (Caller Line Identification). Unless you're using the Esat Business connection maybe?

    IOL FAQ:
"Is it a roaming account or is it CLI specific?
The account will be CLI Specific. Not all CLI's will be able to avail of the service and as such each successful order can only be used from the qualified CLI."

That could well be it, we are both EX-Directory numbers and so wouldn't show up on the servers as different numbers. But does this mean I can use any BB service if I pinch someones Usernam/Password? if so can we have a new poll "whats your user name?"

I'm not sure that's even possible with current DSLAM equipment, but I'm not a telecoms engineer by any stretch of the imagination. As I understand it, when your line hits the exchange it gets cleaved in two, one half going to the voice side of the exchange, the other half going to the DSLAM. The DSLAM doesn't know what's going on with the voice side, which has your number.

I wouldn't put too much faith in IOL's FAQ. There are other errors/misleads in it. "Dedicated bandwidth". "Unlimited usage". "every time you open your browser you will be allocated a different IP".
