    There's a car-free day on Monday 22nd September, and
To help support Car Free Day, Dublin Buses will be free on all routes*
Get this, It'll cost you nothing on the bus - between the minutes of 10AM to 1PM. Please excuse my scepticism, but what's the bets you'll only see 5 buses in those 3 hours. tbh, that's pretty bloody lame. Most road users will drive to and from work well out of that timeframe. Also, You'll likely have to pay to get home given the time waiting for and getting there by bus.

What happened to last year's generosity of two or three full, fare-free days?

*Excludes Nitelink, Ferry Services and Tours.

    Dublin Bus news centre

    It is what it's.

Cork city businesses have gotten together to cancel car-free day in Cork. They're protesting because of all the road works going on in the city at the moment. (If anyone hasn't been in Cork recently it's been like a warzone for the last 4 years with the drainage works, kind of like luas in Dublin).

Good to see free enterprise putting a stop to that kind of environmental carry on.

Dublin Bus are limiting the free rides cos (they claim) the peak hours buses are packed as it is and they don't wish to make it worse. Putting on extra capacity doesn't seem to be a consideration

Well I'm finished work on Monday morning, and you can bet your ass I won't be cycling or getting a bus. Besides, it costs me more to have the car off the road, than on it.

Guess what I'll be doing on Monday??

He he! Dublin has the LUAS... seems all the work around seems to be for it. I asked a kid on the beach was that a dancastly he was making, he said "nah, :luas line 3!

They're doing this car free day business here in Kilkenny as well, which is utterly pointless, there is NO public transport whatsoever, unless you like throwing buckets of money at taxi drivers.

    It's a European-wide initiative. Have a laugh
Therefore, "In town without my car!" is a unique moment in the year when the elected town councillors can test their transport policies in situ.
HAH! Transport policy? What's one of them? The idea will just go to show how utterly, utterly useless and unreliable our transport system really is

    It is what it's.

Somehow I cannot see Seamus Brennan taking the Bus to work, and home again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

Seamus Brennan only just got his driving license, so he's probably quite used to not driving anywhere. Mind you, considering his position, that doesn't by any means mean that he uses public transport!

I'll be driving to work on Monday, as work is nearly 20 miles away.

Maybe when the give the entire puplic transport service an overhaul, I'd definitely think about it. Otherwise, eh, NO!

Maybe because they already use as many busses as they can (save ones down for annual maintenance / engine overhaul, etc.) at rush hour?

No, I heard on the last word last week that it was because they didn't want to add to the congestion at peak hours.

But if everyone is on their free bus then there'd be less congestion

Or maybe it's because there's lots more profit to be made at rush hour than at other times...

Well i decided to be environmentally friendly for the laugh.

Any weekday rushour in heavy traffic from my door to work takes 45-50 mins in the car.

Today walk to bus stop 15 mins
    Wait for bus 10 mins.
Bus time to city center 45 mins
Wait for another bus to work from city center 20 mins
Bus journy time to work from city 30 mins
walk to work from bus 5 mins.

A grand total of 2 Hours 5 mins.

Thats over twice as long as it takes.
I'm phoning for a lift home today i think.

    Jesus thats disgraceful

Well about 15 buses went by me today from 8.15 thanks to people getting the buses, and best of all I missed my first lecture.

    Stupid car free day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 376 ✭✭K2

I believe this is what Dublin Bus ment by adding to the congestion.

didnt notice any major difference, still got the first bus that came via leeson street, managed to get a seat as always...

for a 'car free day' that didnt stop the bus sitting at the traffic lights for 10 minutes while about 100 cars queued up infront of us at stephens green.

Has just been like any other regular monday for me... car what day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

In kilkenny they closed the high street and dug it up. So it was fairly car free, until you went around the corner.

The thing is that in other European capitals you can very easily make do without a car. I believe that in the Netherlands they are running free public transport for the entire week

it was only between 10am and 1pm that you were allowed to get on for free

    unless ofcourse you ment that...

work gives me a monthly bus & rail pass as a priviledge, i never pay for the bus anyway... not as if it was going to make much difference if it was a free day or not for me :)
