    Hi folks,

Sky-High 2004 should be out in a couple of weeks. It will be in stock in Easons O'Connell St, Dublin, Birr and Dunsink Open nights, at Whirlpool, and directly from the IAS. Johns email address is below if anyone else would like to stock it!

Any proceeds go to the IAS.

    Cheers,

    Forwarded Message:
    hi everyone,

hope no-one minds me getting in a plug for the annual guide to what's up in Irish skies that Liam Smyth of the IAS and myself have written for the last twelve years.

this year, Sky-High is bigger than ever with more expanded data on all the major highlights for the year ahead and additional tables of phenomena of use to the more serious observer.

the booklet is mainly pitched at the beginner or casual skywatcher and most of the phenomena are accessible to naked-eye or binocular observers. The month-by-month section details all the configurations of the planets each period.

the two-page "primer" sets the scene in clearly explaining various astronomical terms while we can proudly claim that our guide was the first of any of the annuals to produce a comprehensive round-up of what were the headline stories in astronomy and space the previous 12 months.

    the full table of contents reads;

    1. Cover (1 page)
    2. Introduction/
at a glance table of highlights for the year/
star parties in Ireland (1 page)
    3. Your night sky primer (2 pages)
    4. Review of the year just gone (3 pages)
    5. The 2004 June 8 transit of Venus (2 pages)
    6. Month by month sky diary (12 pages)
    7. Space missions in 2004 (3 pages)
    8. The Sun ... eclipses, rotation numbers, co-ords (1 page)
    9. The Moon ... occultations, phases, libration data,
perigee and apogee, and much more (3 pages)
    10. Lunar eclipses ... two visible next year (1 page)
    11. Planetary data ... various phenomena (1 page)
    12. Comets ... C/2001 Q4 and C/2002 T7 naked eye? (1 page)
    13. Meteors ... month by month details (2 pages)
    14. Asteroids ... 4179 Toutatis at just 4 LDs! (1 page)
    15. Variable stars ... Algol and LPVs (1 page)
    16. Resources ... list of websites (1 page)

the cover price is five euro and is a steal for the amount of research and production that has gone into this non-profit guide to serve the Irish astronomy community. I'll have copies at the Whirlpool Star Party in Birr though they can also be bought through the Irish Astronomical Society for six euro including postage (will add more details on that later).

if anyone has any comments or wants to know more, they can add a post to this thread or mail me directly -- skynotes at eircom dot net

    regards,

    John
