MacOs X can boot from the internal cd/dvd rom or an external firewire drive. As far as I know usb devices only get initialised when Macos X is booted so that rules out booting from an external usb cdrom drive.I could be wrong though.

hmmm...how about booting from a firewire device run through the pcmcia or will i run into the same brick wall with no drivers installed until bootup??? - i shouldnt need to reinstall anything really (i hope) if i do a full disk copy from the original hard disk (4 gig internal) to the new hard disk (30 gig via firewire) and then swap them will that work ?? the new disk is blank - original has os x and 9.2 and progs..

other option is simply leaving the install of os 9.2 on the 30 gig, swapping the hard disks.... if i do this will i be able to transfer the OS x install across without any problems and be able to boot to 9.2? - i havent used it yet so im not too sure what the folder system etc.. is like... anything i need to look out for

Oh i should point out the orig OS 9.2 install was on an ibook so i'll rpbably have to trasfer all the extentions from the powerbook one across anyhow before some devices work (e.g. scsi)

    thanks

The following are taken from apple support website regarding booting from USB.

Important Information About Startup Disk Devices

Be sure a valid startup disk is selected in the Startup Disk control panel. If an invalid startup disk is selected, your computer could take as long as 2 minutes to locate a volume that it can startup from. PC Card devices and RAM disks are examples of devices that are not valid to start up from, even though the icon may be displayed in the Startup Disk control panel.

Selecting the Network Disk icon in the Startup control panel without having a Netboot server properly setup will also significantly delay the time it takes you PowerBook to boot up.

Your computer cannot startup using an external USB device.

    What's New to USB?

Beginning with the Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) and the iMac (Slot-Loading), two new features to USB are most apparent: support for USB audio devices and booting from USB drives.

USB Audio Devices: This includes any device also that supports the Isochronous USB protocol (which are mostly Audio in nature). This includes USB speakers, microphones, and other recording/playback devices.

Bootable USB drives: A storage device such as a SuperDisk, Zip disk, or other USB storage drive can be used to hold a valid system folder and used at startup.
